Default Advice on codes 71-74.....

Ok. I finally fixed my primary O2 sensor problem (code 41). But for whatever reason, I get codes 71-74, meaning, misfire detected on all 4 cylinders intermittently. This only happens when the car is from a cold start. I ran the **** out of her when the car is warm but no misfire codes appeared.

This is what I'm running. Stock sumitomo spark plug wires (trashed my accel wires with 30k miles in it), NGK BKR7E-11 plugs gap at .32 and retarded timing 15 degrees.

Does this mean I need an MSD ignition box? Does anyone else have any idea? The check engine light gets me really annoyed.

Compression test looks good??

I had a similar set of codes.. and it turned out to be ringlands were cracked and broken...

That was the result of my misfire codes...

Jake. Please elaborate. Are these the piston rings? :knock on wood:

My car only has 28k miles in it mildy driven. I'll do a compression test if that's what it takes to isolate the problem.

How does the car run? Does it miss or run abnormally?
With my toda cams I always get codes 71-74. Its basically due to the CFK
sensor sometimes being off from the sensor in the distributor. My motor is
fine and runs perfectly, I just get those codes.

Are you running the Greddy kit? People always get 71-74 for some reason on the Greddy GSR kit.

Dustin. I do have the Greddy kit.

sgT. My car runs perfect with no hesitations or backfires. Boost comes in pretty solid and my car would just haul ***.

I'll try to reset my ecu again and see if it really appers during cold start. How about the plug gaps. I didn't have these codes when I was still using the stock platinum plugs. Do the wires matter?

I get the codes now that I have put RC 370cc injectors in! My buddy with a 240 with SR20DET swap and Electromotive told me he gets misfires when his motor is cold too. I don't have any drivability issues at all after the code is tripped. I reset the ECU let it run then turned the car off then restarted after about 10 seconds it would trip again. So I figure it is a 2 trip code to trip the CE light. What is your set up?

DB8: what up man its Nick. Listen I got the same codes and had them for about 5 months..... Problem was my rotor and you should just change your distributor cap while you are at it. Trust me and check the rotor. I had the same deal when I reset the ecu my codes were gone for the whole day, come next morning and they were right back. I have it at stock timing as well. Laters

Cool. Thanks Nick. I'll probably just try the distributor cap replacement and see where it stands. It's cheaper rather than replacing the rotor alone.

b18b98. Yeah. I replaced the O2 sensor. I got mine used from the previous owner and was kind enough and gave to me for free and noticed an improvement at idle. You can actually pick one up at your local automotive parts store. I was qouted $135 and $235 at the dealership.

i am having the same codes now myself and am trying to figure it out too.i have replaced the cap, rotor, coil wire, wires and plugs and i still get them.i get them only at idle(hot or cold).also,it is sometimes three, somtimes four cylinders and it only happens after a few days of the ecu being reset. i have a friend at the acura dealer that told me it could be the tdc sensor.he is going to bring me a distributor housing so i can try it.this is driving me crazy.

Ok, you know the part of the piston between the rings? hehe, well I had pieces of the pistons, between the rings, just laying there when they took the pistons out the pieces fell out onto the floor...

the actuall rings were kinda burnt looking around these spots...

the car seemed to run fine, but had a rough idle and when i slowed down there was a gurgleing sound and some oil smoke rolling by the window (depending on wind direction)....

twas a sad day indeed... *speaking really quickly *--- Thats when a decided to sleeve the block/rods/pistons and the works.... *dirty old man evil grin laugh*.. muuhahhahaahahahhahhahaha

Hey, sup Joel. Okay, so far so good, I haven't gotten the codes 71-74 for about over a week now. I didn't replace anything. I knew it was an intermittent problem and it only appeared during cold starts.

I started to brain storm the problem. Big questions to myself is, "Why would all my cylinders would 'cause a misfire" just right after I turned the ignition. I know my car is pretty much in good shape with 28k miles in it. I know I have bigger injectors that came with the greddy kit. Good wires and plugs.

I noticed something during the ignition startup. Just by sitting my car for a good amount of hours during my regular driving, then I start the car again. With all of the fuel that was dumped by the injectors, I would assume that the fuel being burnt at the combustion has already been disintegrated. So during a cold startup, in order for all 4 cylinders to fire up correctly with colder plugs, it needs a good amount of fuel for it to ignite.

So here's how I did. I resetted the ecu one more time from a cold start (early in the morning). Turned the key twice where it usually lits up all the LED's. That actually initializes the injectors and sprays a good amount of fuel to the cumbustion. Tried it again one more time and then start the engine. NO CODES for me. I'm happy as hell.

I do this procedure often now since it works for me. These guys on this board are really knowledgeable when it come to force fed cars.

Peace Out.

Running the car too rich would cause a misfire code and unburnt gas going out the exhaust. A defective o2 sensor would cause it also. Don't you guys just love turbo tuning?
