Gotta pay to play.

If it weren't for Chinese eBay **** then maybe people would understand just how reasonable the prices of quality name brand parts really are. Especially when most of the time you end up having to buy more of whatever part to replace. Which can easily and quickly cost more than had you purchased the name brand part in the first place.

Hell my Wiggins clamps cost more than my car. I have a turbo that's worth more than 3 of my current cars. I even have 2 oil coolers that each cost more than my super rare, super expensive turbo lol.

Modifying cars has never been and will never be a cheap hobby. Unless your some high schooler that buys a beat to **** civic or 240 and proceeds to put fake wheels, fake coils, loud generic exhaust, and other needless **** on the car and then you proceed to spray paint it poorly with 6 different colors then start talking

After owning an STi for 5 years, everything in the Honda world now seems like a bargain. Even the 7163 is a deal if you look at it - it has an integrated wastegate, bov, and boost controller. That alone saves $4-500 on other costs.

And even though the 7163 is like $1800, most stock-fitment aftermarket Subaru turbos are in the $1500+ range anyway. Its all relative...

After hearing how much an SR20DET cost my friend for his 240 (that still isn't running right, because after the swap he can't afford some hard-to-find ignition piece)...**** that. I'll stick to my "slow" Hondas.

Think about this. I have 5 sr20det motors on storage and a built vg30dett lol. Not a lot of people pay full price in the 240 world, at least not the smart ones haha.

That's my point with the 7163 as well. Plus the aftermarket world is starting to offer accessories for theEFR turbos . Treadstone had their own vband turbine housings, Turbosmart offerstheir billet adjustable wastegate actuator for those who want to run less or way more than the standard actuator allows. They also offer two kinds of bypass valves as well. One is a recirc like the standard one but with adjustability as far as spring preload, the other converts the EFR to an atmospheric bov and it actually sounds very sexy .

I had a 280z for a while so I know what you mean. Not necessarily the expense, but how much custom fab is required. Coil overs require sectioning the struts and welding coil sleeves. Tuning requires megasquirt, which means building your own harness. Body panels are few and far between. I love those cars but hondas are retarded cheap and easy to work on in comparison.

sometimes what is cheap to you guys, is not cheap to others. wish I could say my Honda is cheap to build. feels like its taking a arm and a leg to build it correctly

It might not be cheap on it's own, but compare it to doing the same amount of work on other makes, and it suddenly starts to look comparatively cheap. A complete S14 SR swap is what, $3k? A 2JZ is $3k without the transmission, which will cost you another what, $4k? Looking at the JEGS catalog (I love how they keep wasting their money sending me those, by the way), a good V8 crate long block will run you $10k, once again for just the engine.

Yeah, Hondas are comparatively cheap.

Exactly. And with the kind of aftermarket support hondas have it makes a LOT of things much cheaper vs cars with little to no aftermarket, where many parts have to be custom fabbed or are produced in very limited numbers with a very high price tag.

Let's put it this way. I found a b series 6spd (real) sequential straight cut dog box. Includes everything from a pre assembled trans with helical lsd, shift linkage, push/pull shifter, 2 complete pairs of super strong chromoly axles (Porsche style CVs), chromoly intermediate shaft billet mount, billet front hubs with extended studs, integrated hydraulic throw out bearing, etc.

It's actually very affordable, especially when you consider the average cost of high end axles, even just a new pair without hubs and you get 2 sets with hubs and a serious intermediate shaft, 4spd h pattern dogbox gearset(good fit drag, not good for street/mountain run/track day like the close ratio 6spd), helical lsd, reinforced trans cases (sequential was redesigned for more structural rigidity), upgraded shift linkage, aftermarket shifter (i think the long is a fair caliber comparison) and the other tiny stuff. not to mention the added cost of replacing weak oem and oem based parts will only add to the cost

You can see that paying a bit more for better components in this case, at least for my application, is perfect. I'm still waiting to hear from the company in regards to a semisolid price based on exchange rate. Only thing that might suck is shipping since it comes from central Europe (the nice part) and the trans isalready assembled in one piece save for the linkage, shifter, etc so it'll probably have to be crated and shipped via air freight.

Obviously this isn't happening immediately but I've been researching dog box/sequential transmissions for various projects and it has paid off IMO. Since the car will bounce between street use with the possibility of it turning into a track day car with just a simple readjustment/change of suspension components, alignment and tires.

Uk based geartronics offers a pneumatic standalone paddle shift system. The ecu is closed loop and can vary ignition cut on upshift based on load, rpm, power/torque, etc as opposed to simple timer based systems that just cut x spark for y amount of time. The timer systems can result in drivetrain damage from the transmission not being fully unloaded before the computer changes gears. The geartronics ecu also supports a cable or rod style actuator for downshifting without a loss in brake pressure, no clutch (assuming dog box only) downshifts and so on .

A close local friends lotus exige has a quaife 6spd sequential trans with the closed loop geartronics paddle shift system makes it perform brilliantly.

I dont miss looking at those prices. That's just a stock trans with 20k miles on it and its still $3k.

Built trans for reference:

I like that I found my z6 transmission for $150 and not $3k :D

Lol 3k? Iirc my friends transmission guy/buddy does full rebuilds, carbon syncros, refresh everything, for like 1900 with parts and labor (or somewhere around there) and it is one buttery smooth transmission now. I cant remember if he had an lsd installed into that gsr trans at the same time or of he already had one in it though

your not even kidding. one of my good friends just put himself together a piston and rod 2.5l wrx. sweet turbo kit, 3076 etc. made 422 awhp on like 20 psi. i think it was even detuned for the street and still destroyed 3rd gear about a week later.

i could buy 2 of my mixed gear ratio gsr trans with mfactory lsd that takes 422whp like nothing for the price he is looking to spend for a stock trans

damn. and you have 1200$ into your trans? Your buddy must have got the "gullible" discount . Shouldn't cost too much more than that for someone who knows what they're doing to do an sr20 swap. I prefer the Rb's over the sr20 anyways. And hell, the most of rwd nissan 5-speeds use the majority of the same internals.

$1200 in the transmission in my Civic. I don't own a Nissan, nor will I ever. They're the Ford of Japan, and I don't mean that in a good way.

Nissans are generally very stout, especially the engines.

And you somehow jumped from A to Q, skipping every stop in between to come up with that. You know what psychologists call that? Projection.

Compared to what, though? A high schooler's science fair project is reliable compared to a Ford, but I wouldn't ride one to work every day, ya know? In Japan, they're easily the lesser of the three big names.
