Default D16y8 set at 21 degrees?

Hi all! I really need some help I have never fully understood how to properly advance my timing, and use my advance dial on my gun I’ve read posts after post and still need some clarification. Here’s my situation....
  • I have a 1998 ek coupe with a d16y8, I visited the tuner today and picked up a chipped p28 tuned on chrome however he told me to set my base timing at 21 degrees.. how do I advance the timing and know that my mark is lining up to 21 degrees if I’m correct the pulley is not marked past 16 ? Any help would be appreciate guys thanks in advance
Mods are just bolt ons headers full exhaust and intake

21 degrees not at idle! Its on light throttle or wot. Idle is round about 14-16° degrees at idle.

need a advance light to do that...set your advance light to +5 and shoot for the factory 16* mark. 16+5 = 21

I never used an advance light so thats about as much as i Know. Not sure why your tuner wants 21 tho he should use 16* and make timing chaged in the tune IMO

See that's what I'm saying 21 just seems way to high I've never used the advance dial I'm hella confused still.. I think I'm going to let him install the p28 and time it.. I swear... But I think I get what you're saying with the +5, basically get it set at 16 degrees then turn the dial to 5 which would add 5 degrees? Or now you're making me think maybe I'm supposed to spin the dial to 21 ahhhhh nevermind I'm still lost lol

pretty sure you add the number to whatever your shooting, so if you set to 21 you need to shoot the 0* timing mark, so it just adds onto what number you already have available

The fact that your tuner wants 21* bothers me tho, have you talked to any other tuners in your area?

I’m with you that 21 just doesn’t sit right with me I wish I knew more about tuning it’s time to do a little research for some reputable tuners here in south Florida, I’ve been out of the Honda game for many years
