Help reading block stamp for bearings D16
In the example in the manual the letter code for the number 4 journal is C.
What is the letter code for my number 4 Journal?
It is unclear to me because my letters are stamped upside down compared to the example.
Only one bearing in the entire engine shows much wear. (see image)
No copper color showing thru even on that bearing.
What do you think about leaving well enough alone and just leave all the existing bearings in place?
This car is a garage queen, I drive it about 1000 miles a year.

The letters on the block indicate the main bore housing size (to calculate your main bearings).
the crankshaft will have letters/numbers indicating the main and rod bearing journals (crankshaft journal size).
Hope that makes sense

Yes I understand that part. The confusion is knowing which way to read the marks on the block. which letter corresponds to which journal.
Normally you can tell up from down and you read left to right but in this case my letters are upside down compared to the example so do I read from the outside of the block towards the middle, or from the middle towards the outside.
Where would I go to get a definitive answer?

Focus on the image in the factory service manual that you posted... forget that the letters are upside down. To be clear, the main bearing letters from cap 1 to 5 would be C,A,A,B and B.

I tried to reverse engineer the order as you suggested.
I would say that method failed.
Looking at the markings on the existing bearings there are only two different codes (PH3-S4C & PH3-S4D)
But using the secret decoder ring with the markings on the block in either direction results in 4 different color codes.
Does anyone know how to cross the markings on the bearings to part numbers?
