Default Ring issue- what to buy 81mm b series

I have a engine that was just honed. Current (new) rings are at .028 on the top and .025 on the bottom.. obviously too big for a oem rebuild. Can i buy 81.5 rings and file them to fit?
edit- 81mm b series

That is my understanding of how it's done.

You can do that but the ring will never be perfectly round after you size it up. Tension will be higher as well.

I did that with my current motor (85mm rings filed down for my rehoned 84.5mm bore). Im not completely happy with it and probably wouldnt do it again. I've found hastings rings seem to come big, but if you buy rings from a piston manufacturer ie cp they come tighter perhaps with the intent to file to fit. (even though i think they are made by hastings anyway...) just my experience over the years

How about factory 81.25mm rings? Is that a thing? What Is your actual bore size right now, was this engine honed at 81mm too many times? I am wondering if your piston to wall clearance is going to be to high now as well. Maybe it is time to bore to 81.25...

No, i wouldn't reccommend using 81.5mm rings on 81mm bore.
You would be better off running a 81mm ring that a little loose.

Not sure why quality control on rings among ALL manufactures is so poor..

Wiseco, CP, Arias, ect 35 % of the time 1st & 2nd rings are too loose but good thing is that most manufactures will allow you to ship those rings back for new rings with tighter clearance, you just have to pay for shipping.

NPR, Nippon, 90% of the time 1st & 2nd rings are too loose for me liking but workable.
