I think the other factor in the Drifting Inquisition is to what degree do the Japanese mountain racers use drift? The tire-smoking-tail-wagging-jackassery so common to Best Motoring and Option videos is, in my understanding, different than that practiced in the mountain runs.

I understood the downhill runs to require light drifting to scrub speed and rapidly change the direction of the car in an environment where speed maintenance trumps speed generation as a goal. I think the drift is less an exhibition issue than a car control issue, in these runs. I think that in those circumstances, it may be the fastest way around a corner.

Unfortunately, I don't happen to have a 300whp RWD turbo car and a death defying mountain road nearby or I'd time a run or two

God some of you people make me sick. First off, before you start talking **** like you know something, why don't you do some research, and then after that why don't you learn to drive. In real street racing, not cone dodging, drifting is the fastest way around a turn. And for you retards who were talking about NASCAR and F1, first off, who cares, NASCAR SUCKS, second those are grip events you morons, thats why in NASCAR the turns have such steep angles(Crack Monkey). And in F1, those are 1000 horsepower cars on hairpin turns, why the hell would they use drift, im talking about street cars. So i'll tell you what, I'll be in Atlanta this weekend, im staying at the Chateau Elan. I've already talked to my friend Steve Lanier and he said I can use the track from 12:00pm - 1:00pm, if any of you pathetic 16 year olds with your mom's civic think you can beat me to Suzuki Bridge, be there and I'll show all of you whats up.

ease the **** up pal........... and there are not very mant street racers in here, just mainly track racers. So if you are implying you can run a faster lap than some of these guys with R compounds there is a lot you have to learn about racing.

So i'll tell you what, I'll be in Atlanta this weekend, im staying at the Chateau Elan. I'll take you up on that bet if you can drive ~5 hours north to VIR, because that is where many of us will be this weekend.

To be truly fair, we are going to need identical cars. So let's go to Hertz and get a couple of Ford Focuses or something. Cool?

Or we can do it another weekend at RA. I'm gonna call Steve Lanier's boss, Mike Swaine, to make sure it's ok with him first though.

Ask him to use the track from 12am - 1am to better simulate the night time street racing thing.

Thats some funny ****..

You must not understand what we are implying, driving = FAST IN, SLOW OUT which is NOT optimal for track racing with long straights.... Maybe mountain roads with short straights, but not on the tracks we have..

You may beat me in the beginning of the corner, but i'll have your *** on the exit and down the straight, which is what matters here..

OK, I'll take the Road Atlanta thing seriously cause I don't know this person and have no idea if he's a smartass or a dumbass...

Unfortunately my car is in multiple pieces (it's a race car, we sometimes disassemble them in the winter for maintenance).

Please god, someone loan me a car for this. I'm all over it.

Okay- you pick the cars, but they must be identical and readily available. You can't bring a gun to a knife fight...

Although I do agree with Honda318dx, im talking about maintain roads, real street roads, not courses, when the majority of the track is long straightaways of course drifting isn't going to be the best answer, but everyone here seems to be saying that drifting is never the fastest way and thats not true. Oh and theres no way in hell you can take me.

Mr. TakumiInTokyo, I would take you up on the challenge in a heart beat. If I told my co-driver about what your claims, I bet we could have the car fixed by Saturday just to have some fun with you!!

Scott, or anyone who will be there, please time our friend. Let's see how close he comes to beating a Honda CRX. If he can beat a 1:45.1, then I rest my case - drifting is faster! I won't even take into account that I ran that lap a month ago in "warmer" temperatures than it is now in December. Can also back up that time with a 1:45.2 from a race weekend in July.

Mr. TakumiInTokyo it's ON! And bring (real) slicks, not DOT R tires if you feel they will improve your drifts.

btw, I'm dead serious about this post. If you do not post your lap times so we can all get an idea of your high level of skill and knowledge, you are nothing but words and misguided words at that.

I don't really care about racing you. That point would take less than 5 minutes to prove (about 1:45 to be more precise). I'm just all over the hour of free time at Road Atlanta.

Hey Alex, if this Jackassery actually comes to bear (doubtful), can I use your car to beat him as well? I'd owe you some laps in the Integra next year.

Heh I wish! But the CRX is still at Cottrell's getting fixed! lol The street tires on the Type R are well not in a great shape to put it lightly. Two of the v700s on the white rims are corded. It might be good for 1 or 2 laps though.

But seriously, if I knew this was 100% for real I would look for a tow truck and bring "our" CRX up there even with two finals on Monday. Just for the free hour of track time if for nothing else. Haha I really don't know whether to tell Louis about a "free" hour of track time this Saturday. He would definitely tow our CRX up there, but if this is not true he would kick my a$$. So I'm going to play it safe here. lol

First of all Hracer, or should I say Hasbeenracer, I could take 5 seconds off of your time easily, and, why would I bring slicks you lameass, the whole point is to prove that drifting is faster in real street racing.

Bring "our CRX", God your pathetic. For the last time were talking about street cars. And by the way, I am dead serious, I'd love to show you americans just what real street racing is, Because I know your scared to show up because you can't drift or for that matter drive, why don't you stay home and watch your NASCAR instead. But if you do show up, you might want to shave your mullet for weight reduction.

ROTFLMAO !!

If you could take just 2 seconds of that, you would be in the news my friend. I WISH Tom Fowler or some more people could see this!! They would die laughing. lol !

And btw, I hope to have many years of racing ahead.

TakumiInTokyo, can I ask what experience you have? (other than squealing tires in hairpins)

I still can't believe this. I hope that people other than myself are getting a good laugh.

BTW, this is NOT nascar. http://www.scr-scca.com/Photos/2001ecr/DSC00010.JPG And that's the CRX you find so amusing. I think I'll just sit back now and enjoy this thread without wasting my time replying to pointless posts. Go for it guys!
