Default Drifting questions

Okay we've all seen these guys in their TRD Truenos driving around and drifting right? Okay good. Well me being the monkey see monkey do I attempted to do the same in my civic. Problem. My right tire is now toeing inward. Does this happen to the guys in RWD cars? Will alignment fix my problem? Anybody here do it at all?

Drifting is not even remotely performance-oriented and I doubt you will find anyone here who does it, or even cares about it.

FYI - drifting is done with RWDs because the heart of it is the power-induced oversteer - something your car is incapable of.

Did you hit something?

The vast, vast majority of people here are autocrossers and road racers. Post about something dangerous like this on public streets is an invite to a flame fest.

Drift on street != drift in dirt.

If you want to discuss rally/offroad driving techniques, then I'm all ears. But driving in a semi-controlled spin around public roads is dangerous. Doing so at 99% of the circuits in the US is just slow.

Yeah, it's slow even at karting tracks. But, you have to admit that it's fun on kart tracks.

Excuse my inexperience (which my vocab will demonstrate quickly) but wouldn't trailbraking/tto be the fastest way around an auto-x hairpin or box thingy (irrespective of FWD/AWD/RWD)? Is the definition of "drifting" different than that? Personally I always thought it was having all four let go but from most references it seems to be a form of Ebraking/Trailbraking/TTO/etc . . . clue me in guys and gals.

Thanks Alistair. I was under the impression he was talking about doing it on pavement a la faux-fast Options style also.

Perhaps he was talking about doing it on dirt? I doubt it.

drifting= a senseless competition of burning up tires quickly while driving with no rear traction or a very sensible technique used by "rally crossers" and "off-road" drivers in vehicles designed for such

it may look cool, but competitions are held on tracks with qualified drivers and personell and should not be done on the street by kids in civics

Brian - I don't think you will find anyone to argue with the fact that it takes skill but much like the WWF and NASSCAR, (which also require skill) it is nothing more than fluff entertainment.

TTO/trailbraking through a hairpin at an autox would be the quick way, but the typical usage of "drifting" in the import-crowd is sustaining a huge slip angle for a period of time much longer than that required of a quick autocrosser. The autocrosser would rotate the back end, and then be merrily on the gas aimed for the next element of the course. The "drifter" would be sliding and sliding and sliding... Some road course corners might be taken in a bit of a drift, ie Hogpen taken quickly seems to have all 4 sliding a bit, but that wouldn't qualify as the massive slip-angle tail-out action of a "drifting competition". Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't done too much research into the subject.

Chris, appreciate the help on the skinny track q's. I foller ya now. I thought they were generally refering to a self induced tail-out condition.

Oh yeah, "on the street is bad, mmkay."

Certainly no more senseless than dodging cones.

After watching 'Sideways Stephan' do his thing at the ring, I decided I'd like to try a bit of senselessness too. Anybody got a yellow RUF CTR I can borrow?

Performance oriented or not, drifting does look cool. Watch any best of motoring video when they review rear wheel drive cars.

My definition of drifting is exactly that of phat-S's. I call sliding whatever I see in those cool "drifting" videos.

Everybody is right, drifting (the import definition) is not the fastest way around autox/track. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen! lol I only wish I had outside videos of the (too) many time whenever I made the mistakes of going too hot into a turn. From inside the car it sure looks cool, but that's when you have to check your mirrors and see where the car behind you will make its move. A good number of unwanted "drifts" came in the rain, which luckily were only that and not unwanted contact with walls.

At the autox, a slide will definitely result in a slower time. But remembering the good old days of having the scca autocrosses at the atlanta motor speedway parking lots, it sure was entertaining to watch(and do)!

The key is the personal definition of drifting.

I call what I (and HRacer) do in turn 12 at Road Atlanta "drifting." And it's stinkin' fast.

The import NOPI-Boy definition of drifting is just plain being tail happy. No, it isn't fast and no, it isn't safe to do on the street.
The WWF comment above was pretty much dead-on.

well drifting can be achieved in a fwd car but basically all you can do is "snap" it or pull the ebrake. btw, who said anything about TRD? anything RWD can drift. Corollas (ae86's) are just popular b/c they are cheap. and truenos and levins (japanese corolla) are mainly fwd (only in the early to mid 80's where they rwd)

I dont think that drifting would be the fast way around the course, even in the rear drivers. ex a man in his corvette would be senselessly throwing the rear end of his car around the cones, I beat him every time and by several seconds. then in november he learned (or got lucky) to control the car and he stomped me, what was my 5 second advantage turned into his. I have no idea about rallying so will not comment about that.

On the track
Drifting while countersteering = slow

4 wheel drift with no countersteer = fast

Right?
