This is to carry on the discussion of any changes that should/need/would like to be done in the NHRA SportCompact Street Stock Class. Original discussion started in the Sema thread here https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1797615 .
As you guys know NHRA listens to it's racers very well. Look at the Pro Light Sportsman class changes they are making for 2007.
I personally will comment as a spectator and fan since I do not reguarally compete in this class (My car is slow, so Brackets for me
). What Loan, CDR, and other guys have done to make there cars as fast as they are within the rules and weight is just insane. But there are so little number of cars trying to qualifying in the class. Why is that? Is it the tires issue? Is it the weight? Or running a full exhaust with muffler? Or all of them? In BOTI and IDRC the Street ALL MOTOR classes are full of 16 or more cars trying to qualify. Should something be done by NHRA????
What is your opinion as both a fan and/or racer ?

As a spectater and racer of the street stock class,i believe the rules should stay the same just maybe a few changes. i think slicks would be good but, bfgoodrich pays good money to keep this class alive and i think it should stay that type of class with the tires . if more people would come this class would be just as a big as spfwd.

Yes they listened to the racers but it didnt involve changing the class one bit. It was an idea a majority of the people who actually race wanted it changed.
In order to get Street Stocked changed would require those like Loan, Chris Dead, Greg Samaroo and many others who race in the class to agree. Why would NHRA push those away always racing. Its almost a spec class and could have some exciting racing. This goes back to the "if you change the class they will come" thing. We are lucky to have companies like BFG helping out. Support those companies that help us out.

my apologies for airing out all my opinions in the last thread. anyway i will say for now i think the rules are ok. well see after the first couple of races next season if some changes need to be made. i know of a couple of cars that should be coming out to compete hopefully that will encourage more people to give it a shot. i know some people are not crazy about drag radials and the rest of the rules but the same was said when SpFWD was created. people wanted bigger slicks, didnt want exhausts or minimum weights. look at it now. the only way the class will prosper is for people to participate, and once that happens im confident that NHRA will keep the rules in check as well as listen to concerns and ideas that racers have to help the class prosper.

i really dont like the whole drag radial thing bu if BFG is putting in so much money and support for the class then so be it...drags it is....cuz w/o bfg there will be no class...but if i could make a change that would allow BFG to still sponsor the class then i would say add slicks...and i think that the weight should be lowered too...i mean its only 50lbs. lighter then sfwd

Lower weight penalties for the 6cyl guys that can't even make 4cyl Honda hp. But then again, I'm biased!

I'm with him. The only reason we don't go in this class is because we can't run slicks. The IDRC and BOTI street classes are so fun and there's alot more people trying to compete and qualify. NHRA has way too many rules and restrictions. Mad props to the guys running fast and winning in Street Stock ,but I'd rather run the IDRC and BOTI. Besides , that's where it all began.

I like to call that being fair. At least you know the car next to you is pretty much running the same set up you are. I like the fact when I was in tech somebody didnt have a scatter shield and happend to be friends with the NHRA tech offical. When the racer asked, can I bring it tomorrow? The Tech offical said, No you can't race without it. Lets face it, everyone wants to be fast but when everyone has to follow the same strict rules as everyone else and racing is side by side that is when it gets exciting.
Between a lot of the SFWD competitors we don't care if NHRA puts a ban on the 42R and put us on 61mm turbos. As much as that would slow a lot of us down it would bad *** side by side racing and that is exciting!

rules and restrictions it makes it fair. i raced battle street stock it only had 6 cars i n the class at that event. idrc, boti, and nhra all good places to race. rules keep everything fair for everyone. so i think they all should have there own way with there own rules. so it makes it more fun . so u just have to change stuff up when u run at each one
How in the world does slicks make a class more exciting???
It doesn't make it more exciting, it does the following -
1) Allows people that don't know how to drive well enough to be lazy and run on slicks and continue to get shitty 60ft times on them.
2) Allows people to be cheap, for just the sake of being cheap.
Keep your slicks, you run IDRC and BOTI anyway, but when the NHRA rolls into Vegas or Pomona, mount some DR's and have some fun. That increases your chances of winning an event by 2 events every season if you live in Cali.
When I was building my Neon, I had already planned on running both BOTI's Street Stock which allows slicks and NHRA's Street Stock which allows BFG radials only.
Alot of your cars are already built, so why not spend another $500 for drag radials and some lightweight wheels?
I don't see why that's the biggest issue and why it should be changed. Next thing you'll ask for is for the weight limit to be lowered so your stripped out EG can enter and run 11's on slicks, when Loan does it full body, interior and drag radials. She spent the money, so can your cheap ***.
This class not only takes power, but some actual SKILL to win and be good at. I guess what your saying is Loan is better than you, not to mention her car would be faster than most of the people that complain about the radials if she ran slicks and did nothing else.
SSK is fine where it is. The curb weight rule keeps the CRX from being built and K powered added and run 10 seconds on DR's. That is flat out unfair and stunts growth. If you want to run a CRX under weight, then use the D motor and have fun, I see nothing wrong with that.
I'll keep saying it...
Look at Vince's All Motor car. What he learned to make his Mazda 3 hatch run low 10's can be applied to a Duratec powered Focus and it would be competitive with the other cars in the class.
Gee, even Ford might support you or some Ford tuners might help like Steeda, FocusSport and others. I say use the Focus because the Mazda cost more and weighs alot more.
Scott Mohler's car ran 12's on slicks pretty much stock save for some bolt-ons and cams back in '99. He got some help from Nemo and remains the only American car besides a Honda to win a All Motor Championship or Seasonal Championship.
I can get Neons from auctions for under $1500
A 2.4L DOHC from a Stratus or Caravan can be had for $500 or less
Get cams form Crower or Crane, do some minor engine work and you would have 200+hp and 170ft of torque and you can get the car well under weight and move some things around to maximize traction.
I don't know about an all motor Ecotec, but you can use the older Quad 4 engine and get a Calias, Sunfire or Acheiva to scream as well. The old H.O version of the Quad 4 did 195hp and its still supported by the aftermarket.
Again I should add this is my sig -
I am fully mindful this is a Honda board, however there's more to life than the H
Several people have jumped ship because they got tired of waiting for Honda to support them.
But at SSK's level, you can build a Honda, as well as many other cars for this class, even a classic Sentra SE-R can be built to run well. I know there was one down in Florida that ran mid 12's on slicks, all motor (from a regular DE engine, not the VVL). I know you can get decent power out of Nissan's VVL engine as well.
There far too many people on the sidelines and there eyes are filled with stars, they want to be the biggest and the baddest on the block, but they can't afford to build a 9 second or 7 second FWD car, so they sit on the sidelines. How about running this class???? Its not any less exciting and you can gain just as much fame from it...

I am all for seeing other cars out there beside Honda's. I remember a yellow ford ZX2 all motor a couple of years back. I started asking some of the Scion TC guys about making power all motor and getting some weight off there cars and they just gave me the "deer in the headlights" look and said umm check out my lambo doors
. Honda's in all motor street classes have it locked down because of all the years of R&D and testing of different setups. Hell check out the VW Bugs they can give us a whooping because of the many years of R&D. I like seeing toyota involved in the racing. Hopefully some of the stuff Leslie's crew has R&D will trickle down to the street cars.

Yeah -
The problem with tC's for example is the demographic Toyota is dealin with. You know -
Over 18 and don't know SHHH? Just what they learned in Super Street...
They can barely get the car to ET stock cause they can't drive, first time to the strip types. They think they can bolt-on a turbo and run with SRT-4's, let alone built up Hondas....
There's also another set that bought the car and feel it just doesn't have it in it to be competitive, so they opt for Autocrossing and get waxed doing that as well.
You won't see any hardcore tC's that ARENT show cars for a few more years and thats if the buyer base grows a bit older and has more money to play with.
The only way that stuff trickles down is if there isn't any sticker shock...
Growth in the class has been SHOWN to the masses. Then parts and information have to be readily available. Everybody knows just throw a B series in a Honda as your starting point to going fast. You don't have that with other cars and people are lazy. They only know Hondas for example.
Eh, like its HARD to buy a Honda now. There so much information out here, I could build a 11 second all motor EG without trying very hard and get it all from the Summit catalog more than likely...
I know Hondas but drive a Neon... I could build either and if I didn't know something in both camps I know WHO to talk too.
Just like everybody is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys or the Stealers, its easy to be fans of those teams when they win all the time. Its call fair weather status and too many Americans suffer from it.

The only problem i have with the SSC class would have to be the weight factor. The reason i say that is cause my car is a 93 EG vx and with only taking out the back seats and panel's the car weigh's 2150lbs.
So my theory is why should i have to add weight to the car that did'nt even come from factory at 2300lbs
That's just my opinion

i think we should just keep the class the way it is on dr. slicks should not be allowed. the weight yes 2300 is a lot but look at chris dye and loan there all at weight or over, and there still running good times. even brian fisher from inlinepro, and that green eg from the east coast all quick, and mark from utahblue eg.
Yes i understand that they are all at weight but what am i going to to my car to add almost 200lbs.
I'm sorry the weight issue just don't make sense to me.

lower the weight requierement by 100lbs-150lbs, that way all those EG hatches that run the other sanctioning bodies would run NHRA instead of running in q16 they'll run Street Stock.

In street stock you have to keep the back panels in place. Rear seat removal is ok.
Also class rules is 2350 lbs with driver. Is your VX 2150 with you in it? If it is eat McDonalds everyday
I ran SS at the last event but my car was way overweight. 2650 lbs with me in it
. The NHRA Tech at the scales told me damm your heavy

lol well i can definately vouch for that statement. realistically that is kind of the demographic that street stock was created for: newer models, novice racers making the step up from brackets to heads up racing. basically something that would create the next crop of sport compact racers.
the people at scion do a great job taking care of their owners and supporting racers like leslie. right now theyre marketing really promotes owner loyalty through the lifestyle aspect. the big thing is the ability to take a scion and personalize it, not so much as make it faster. it would be cool if someone stepped up and tried to run in the class with a scion/toyota, mazda or something different that might encourage involvement of more racers and maybe even manufacturers and performance companies.

Not true actually, the class was designed and the rules were set before BFG came on board. It was always going to be a drag radial class with the current weight structure to ensure that the class didn't become a mini all motor like Comp4 has become.
