Default How to run alternatorless?

How do you set it up? is it just a regular battery, then you charge it after each pass or what?

what battery?
Will a regular car charger be ok?

you need to buy a TurboStart 16V 2 post battery from Jegs or summit

the TurboStart 16v battery charger from Jegs or summit

you have to buy the Acid for the Battery Local

Sell your alternator on Honda-tech

Here's another thought. Run the alternator but put a switch cutting the larger black with yellow stripe wire coming off the alternator. This shuts off any resistance in the alternator that would rob most of the horsepower. You can re-instate it after the run and use the alternator on the way back to the pits. I did this but never had the guts to try it on a run

The main problem is that during a run a stock charging system will usually fall to less than 13 volts which slows fuel and water pumps down. The 16 volt battery will never drop below 14.5v and usually stays around 15 or so during a pass. It is a big benefit to methanol cars since we are pushing the fuel pumps so hard. Most fuel pumps will put out considerably more fuel at 15v than at 13v. Plus you don't have to deal with alternator belts trying to leave the engine bay at 10k rpm!

If you are equipped to charge the battery between runs then by all means ditch the weight and get yourself a good race battery.

Tony, that's the exact reason we never tried a pass with the alternator shut off.
The only time we ever used it was when tech wanted to test our rear kill switch

Or how embarassed you'll be when the staging guy knocks at your window with your belt in his hand...

I think you can buy the connections from Jerry Bickel.

So could I just unplug the altenator before a run Or is it better to remove the belt??

this mod is not reccomended for street vehicles...I'm only doing it because I need the room for a large turbo and custom header.

lets say you fully charge the battery... how long will the typical charge last? reason i ask is b/c there is just so much dicking around in the staging lanes once you leave the pits. sometimes you have to start the car 4 or more times while waiting (assuming you arent using a tow vehicle) how many starts is a full charge good for and still be able to power all the vehicle systems while running?

It depends on how many amps your car uses while running.

Probably not nearly long enough... Hell, when my alternator belt broke once on my car the voltage dropped 2volts w/in about 1 minute, and I'm sure starting the motor would drain it alot..
