Paint Maintenance
Started buffing the car. Haven't had enough time to do the whole car but will try and finish tonight.
I'm not getting all my swirls and scratches out.
Using the orange pad and the swirl remover I got in my kit. Do I need to go over the area over and over till the scratches come out? I know the ones that I can catch on my nail won't come out but the ones that don't catch don't go away.
Also the 6.5" pads I got with the kit seem too big for the buffer the edges dry out and kick dry wax everywhere.
Pls rspnd.

depends on a lot of things. What polish, pad, speed, how much pressure, how fast your moving the buffer, the list can go on from there.
Depending on the severity of the scratch, wet sanding or compounding will be the only option.
you can go over it more until you get the results you want, or switch to a more aggressive step.

I got a simple question for you...
I kind of like my car to look like a shitbox beater so far that's not an issue due to the fucked up hood and the fading roof... BUT out of curiosity is there anything short of repainting to correct the dreaded Milano Red fading?

Ok heres some pics of my pad with my swirl remover..
I don't have a problem with my white pad and my finishing polish.
I didn't even use my swirl remover on my car because of all the dried wax I get almost instantly when using it and it get all over the place.
The black car is my friends rsx that is very oxidized. Those lines liquid but the dried up polish that accumulates right away.

That pad isn't primed correctly.
Keep in mind the temp. and humidity will have an effect on how the long the polish "lasts". If it starts doing that rather quickly, give it a light mist of water and keep going.

put an order in with autogeek last week, should be here tomorrow:
poor boys nattys paste wax red
klasse all in one polish
6.5 hybrid power black polish pad
detailers wheel cleaner with brush
cobra supreme guzzler waffle weave
ive got an UDM (ultimate detailing machine) that autopia used to sell, its a porter cable basically but apparently a little stronger
I have some 3m pro pads and polishing compound (will get part #s) the pads are 7", do you see any reason I would have an issue trimming them down to 5-5.5"? Ive used them before but I think I should trim the pad down.
I bought the black polishing pad to put the nattys wax on, should i just use it for the polishing compound or will it be too soft? Just need to do some correction on mild-moderate swirling.
also, how do you prime a pad?

Priming a pad is simply covering the pad in polish.
There are so many ways that people do it.
You can do dots, x's, circles, use you finger to spread the polish around, use the panel you plan to polish, etc.
Just need to make sure that every part of that pad has polish on it.!

Ill see what I can do. I can always buy new pads but I think between the pads and the 3m compound I spent 60-70 bucks and it worked pretty well on car I had before my current 08
btw chemical brothers is having a very cool sale... check it out you might find a pad that is a little smaller for cheap!

thanks for the heads up. i may just grab that 5.5" 3 pack of pads.
Can the same compound be used with different stiffness pads? Say I need to try and get a slightly deeper scratch out so Id just a stiff pad, and then use a softer one with same compound for polishing?
I guess it would help if I had my 3m compound # but thatll have to wait till I can pull it out of storage haha

damn its already been packaged up and im not paying separate shipping for just that. i guess ill put another order in closer to summer if i like the products i did get from them. some of their stuff is a bit overwhelming with the amount of options/products they offer
They do offer a wide range of products but that's because not everybody details their cars as often or go all out on a detail.
I try to do as much as I can but within reasons.
A full detail on my car is about 4 hours... don't do that every week but every 3 weeks so in between im washing and quick detailing to keep the shine up!

got my order in from autogeek. the poor boys red wax smells amazing. I also got detailers pro wheel cleaner. I had to try it last night since my MF10's were sitting inside the house.
It works GREAT. minimal scrubbing needed and the wheels shine like new after
