SQ Sub
I am looking for a good tight sounding sub either 2-10's or a single 12...what does eveyone recommend....I have to rockfords they pound yes but when it comes to quality they rumble and do not sound all that well....recommendations please
Hmm...only 175 us...that could be a problem...haha...just kidding...
You could easily do one IDMAX for that price...and I just so happen to have one for sale...hmmmm how convenient
Two IDQ's would sound great too...especially if you port them.

it'll depend on what kind of box you want.
Sealed, i'd go with about 1.5 cubic feet-2.0 cubic feet.
Ported, I would would ~2.5 cubic feet tuned to 28-32hz.
That would be nice for SQ with some SPL mixed into it.
Thermally, the coil is rated at 1000w RMS. Mechanically, it'll depend on your enclosure. The bigger the sealed box, the less power it'll handle. But you do gain efficiency of the system, transient response, and low-end extention.

The ID Passat had 4 IDMAX's mounted IB with 1400W each on it...so they can definitely handle power.
They sound great with any kind of power actually....I'd give them between 600 and 1000W though...

it should be better, but rockfords have high inductance to start with anyways, so transient response will only improve a bit. You still have the car's resonance in the way and much more. My advice, get another sub to start with. You can try 2.0, but don't expect mind blowing sound quality.

soooo...
Rockford+small sealed box+high inductance+car's resonance=boomy</TD></TR></TABLE>
Inductance is an indicator of the bandwidth of a driver only. In a car sub applications it is a useless value imo, since any descent system will be low passed at a very subwoofer friendly frequency.
Now midbass bump(boominess) caused by putting a particular sub in a tiny box is a different story, that has nothing to do with the inductance.

if you want sq AND good deep, bass go with alpine type r 12's, i have two in my vic and they sound great, very accurate clean and loud as well. a guy i work with had two kicker solobarics L7's, which as supposed to be louder than anything...but mine sounds better and hits harder.
just my 2 cents

the type R is a good sub but does not compate to the IDMAX

Inductance is what gives you that transient response. The higher the inductance, the less control you have. Thats why high inductance woofers have earlier natural freq. roll-off. Subwoofers like the L7s tends to sound boomy, even in a larger box, due to the lack of transient response, compared to other woofers. If we had very good transient response, our ears wouldn't perceive the overhung bass as boomy, rather tight.
Well I think our definitions of boominess differ. I don't consider to be the midbass peak associated with subwoofers in small boxes. With poor transient response most will just say the sub sounds "sloppy" but not boomy.
I have a friend that wanted me to build an enclosure for his l5's. I modeled 12 different enclosures and gave up on making that sub sound good
I agree that inductance determines transient response directly and so does Dan
, but I am not too concerned with it in car sub applications. The tdx has high indutance I am sure(can't find it listed in the t/s I have, it is sglc) but it is not boomy.
