What's the drawbacks of a sealed sub box?
I have a 15" Rockford Fosgate DVC sub in a ported enclosure and am thinking about getting a sealed enclosure to save on space. I know the obvious drawbacks and benefits of a sealed enclosure (loss of lower freq, etc.) but I've heard that sealed enclosures are harsher on speakers. Is that right?
Well, I guess you could say that is sort of true. A ported box is vented, so the cone and suspension is subjected to a slightly lower pressure. Also, the voice coil is cooled a bit better then when in a sealed box. If the sub is designed for sealed, and you don't go over the recommended power levels too much, you should have a happy sub.
the only real drawback to a sealed box is the loss of frequency range. Fosgate subs can handle a lot of abuse, so heat should not be a factor.
Ported and bandpass fit rap music really well and thats pretty much it. A sealed enclosure will make everything sound good just rap would be as boomy.
