fuel trim malfunction & too rich
CEL read code 45.
went to autozone. had 2 codes:
P0170 : fuel trim malfunction (bank 1)
P0172 : System too rich (bank 1)
vtec works just fine.
this makes me think that it is one of the o2 sensor.
what else can be causing this and what should I do?
and what is the difference between Bank 1 and 2, what are banks???

I would be inclined to think that it is the primary o2, but that tends to throw a code 43 from my personal experience. I would say grab a volt meter and test the primary o2.

Re: fuel trim malfunction & too rich (mythias)
i have one in the garage, but i need to figure out how to use it.
is it safe to be testing it with the car running? or do you have the car off with ignition in the on position?
if the o2 voltage is fine, what else is there to look for? i dont think it is knocking or anything, but timing is set at 18 degrees and i use premium gas. (previous owner told me it was set at that)

The R has only one bank. V6's have oxygen sensors on both exhaust manifolds, hence bank 1, bank 2. You can hook a voltmeter to an oxygen sensor when it's running, but I would not recommend it if you don't know what you are doing. There are 4 wires and you only need to measure the voltage on one. It should fluctuate between 0.1 and 0.9 volts.

That's where having an ETM comes in handy
I could take an educated guess, but it could be a very educated wrong answer
