Default VTEC problem help!!!!

Hey, i just bought a 97 gsr, when i first drove it the vtec wasnt kicking in all the time and when it did it was around 6k. Well i checked my oil and it was really low. I put some oil in it about 3/4 a quart and it read on the dip stick half way between the dots wierd? Well i took it back out and drove it again and it hits vtec every time but still at 6k or a little over that. I thought they were supposed to kick in aroudn 4 to 5k. Can any one tell me what the problem might be.

P.S. the check engine light works but doesnt come on.

GSR vtec does engage at 4400 but since the IABs havent opened yet you still have restricted airflow. thus, when the IABs do open at 5800 you feel the power difference more. Sounds like you didnt have enough oil though

they are located in the intake manifold. if youre stock or not far from it than leave them alone.

vtec on a gsr will engage at 4400rpm and its hardly noticeable at all.

VTEC engages at 4400 rpm but your not really suppost to hear it that much, the sound your hearing is your secondary runners in the intake manifold opening up at 5800 rpms. this system is in place to keep a flat torque curve all the way through the power band.

read this before you ask anything else

we just told you.

at 5800rpm the secondaries will open (IAB, butterflies, whatever) and thats the change in tone that you hear. vtec engages at 4400 on a gsr.

GSR motors have the only semi-linear B series powerband. A good set of cams, skunk 2/blox/itr IM and a tune will change that. Less torque, but a lot more on the top end and there will be no question as to when VTEC engages. You will notice.
