Default Hold a button to start car.

I have a 99 ls teg with a turbo timer. I want to have a button hidden in my car so when I go to start the car I have to hold the button down to start it. I don’t know much about wiring things. I would think if I spliced into one a the ignition wirers fare back in the dash would be the best idea. I’m no sure on witch wire to splice into. I was hoping you guy could help me on how to go about doing this.

I was thinking of using a button like this.

Thanks

i dont think he wants a push button to start the car; i think he wants to wire a button that needs to be pressed while starting the car, like the clutch switch, as a theft deterrent.

Its a simple idea. When you turn the key to start your car, your completing a circuit that sends juice to the starter motor, when you let off the key when the engines starts, the circuit is cut. You just need to find the wires that complete the circuit and splice in another switch into it, which then both the key and the switch would have to be pushed/turned to complete the circuit. Although not a hard thing to do, it is a pain in the ***.

The only pics that work are the pics in someone’s quote and they don’t help me.

are you referring to something similar to a kill switch? there are plenty threads on those, including wiring diagrams...

this is rather easy to do. the wire that u need to cut is the Starter wire. after u cut this wire, u need to put a switch or the one that u want--> a push button switch (make sure get a high current one) in SERIES with this cut line. if u open up the plastic peice on the steering wheel column in order to get access to the ignition harness, u will see a bunch of wires. i think there is 5 wires all together in there. theres a solid white wire (constant 12 volts), a black with yellow stripe wire (ignition wire), a white with black stripe wire, a black with white stripe wire, etc. Now im not sure which of the two wires is the starter wire. it is either the black with white stripe or white with black strip wire. im 85% sure it's the black with white stripe wire u need to cut into. to test to see which is the coorect wire, touch one lead of a volt meter or test light on the ignition harness by either the black with white stripe or white with black stripe wire, and the other lead of the voltmeter to a metal surface or bolt around the vicnity of the ignition harness. now with this done, put the key in the igntion and turn it to start the car. which ever wire gives u 12 Volts or lights the test light when the engine is cranked is the starter wire. once again i think its the black with white strip wire.

follow this wire under the dash and cut it in half. then just join the high current switch in series with these two cut wires.

disregard the solid blue, red and green wire in the figure above. it's extra wires to run a turbo timer

If he used a push button, would that button need to always be pressed in for the car to keep running? Or would that button only be needed to just start the car?

Your going to need a bigger switch than that...or you'll need to hack into the lead running to the solenoid.
