ls vtec ???
ive got all my money up and ready to go to buy a b16 for my g2, but all my friends are telling me it would just be cheaper and faster to go ls vtec. My engine has 160k + miles on it, would it be safe to go ls vtec? Exactly what is involved with doing ls vtec? becuase ive heard that after you do this your car just went to weekend driver instead of everyday driver. i just would like to know exactly what im gettin myself into and what i can do with my money. im working with 1800. HELP ME
everybody is gonna tell you to search!
but any ways
First check your compression and inspect your sleeves if your gonna go Lsvtec you want to do everything right the first time...so new gasket, rings Gsr oil and Water pump, and Gsr timing belt should be on order, you might want to hot tank and hone the block and through in some PR3 pistons.
you need any B-series head, type R head would be best but if you dont have the money you can use the B16 head which is similar to the type R head. GSR head is also good. it has a tighter combustion area so u gain a little bit of compression if you use it, Most people are going to say that the B16 head flows better, it does but not by much. Bench Flow charts on Alaniz will show this.
In order for everything to work...you need to tap the oil passage in the head and make the holes for the dowel pins in back bigger. you also need GSR head bolts. you have to tap an oil line from the block to the back of the head. After that its all about wiring, if your car is ODB1 you shouldnt have a problem.wire up VTEC and get a chipped p28 ecu or what ever ecu u want. if it doesnt have ODB, then you might have to figure out a way to engage the vtec solonoid...search..there are many ways to do this.
Rumor has it Lsvtec is unreliable. if its built properly it would last as long as you want it..dont cut short cuts. you can still drive your car daily it wont be a weekend warrior..Alot of people are using Lsvtec daily.
if done properly i dought Lsvtec would be cheaper than a swap, if you really think your engine is that bad u can swap a b16 long block with your ls tranny till you save enough money to change trannys.
now go do more research on lsvtec and you will learn alot more

If you are looking into ls/vtec, i have a b16 head prepped for ls/vtec already, with the dowels relocated and it is tapped and sealed where it needs to be...all you have to do is slap this head on and you are ready to go...400+shipping

your motor has too many miles on it already. its old. especially if its been beaten on which im assuming it has. it wont be as efficient or reliable as the new motor your going to get. personally i dont like ls motors. vtec motors are meant to rev high, ls are not. you put a vtec head on an ls block and its compromising to some sort. something meant to rev high, with something thats not. if it was me id get a newer motor. something that has been less stressed, plus ready to drop in with vtec. just my opinion. i dont know if your looking to get JUST the motor if you are 1800 is plenty.
Umm ya! IVI is correct in a sense but i like the idea of just blowing up ur engine and then having enough to get a new LS and then straping the turbo back onto ur new engine. but honestly thats not a great idea b/c of reliabilty is gone out the window. im in the same boat as u. i have a LS with 158K and i have about 1600 so far and thinking of doing something like u, but not getting a B16. ull be sorry if u do ne way so dont do that. but do a search! i have and ive found if LS/Vtec is done correctly it can last u a long time. i have a friend with it and its great just need a GSR tranny and set to go! but good luck with everything and tell me how it goes. im from philly so we're arent to far from eachother so if u need help Holla. lol
