Hey guys...yesterday my timing belt broke and right when it broke, I heard a noise, sounded like a siren....so today I put the new timing belt on and the noise is constant when the engine is on. I'm not sure if it's from the new timing belt, because it's new and neets to set in? But I'm taking a trip tomorrow and will be driving about 3500 miles so can someone tell me if it's safe? Is it supposed to make noise right after changing the timing belt? Do I need to break it in?? Thanx

theres no such thing as break in timing belt.......either you did it correctly or not....since you said you crank the engine 15 times or so with a snap timing belt, there could be possible valve damage. Also check and see if you tighten all your ps, ac, and alternator belt down....loose belt can make those noise.....did you shoot your timing with a timing gun after installation to make sure its right on the dot?

no I didnt shott the belt w/ timing gun.....is that something that has to be done?

not if you took the belt off but since you didnt its going to be a bitch to do with out one

when timing belt snaps, were u drving hard? or normal? or after car died did you try to re-crank the engine? there are possible chances that have some bent valves. just like anyothers.

or

check everybolts you touched. if tendtion bolts are too tight or too loose it might make sound from belts.

I think that's what it is....just needs to get used to it...I'm sure after drivin 3500 miles it'll be aiight....

If the new belt is too tight, it will make a whining sound, but that doesn't explain the sound it made before it broke. The noise you heard before it broke (sounded like a siren) and then now the sound is constant, this sounds like maybe a water pump or tensioner bearing might be giving up.
