Just use a sharp object to scribe a line from the head to the dizzy. It should keep your timing close. Good luck

yeah just make you some marks where it bolts up then just pull it off and fix it and put it back on according to your original marks. and when you go to start it and if it doesn't start your distributor is probably 180 out.

Well you really can't install it 180 degrees out of timing because the slits are offset. The distributor has a male slit and the cam has a female slit. That is how the distributor is driven when they are in mesh

Yes you can. I've done it before. i had to buy a new dizzy and when i installed it the timing was out 180 so i took the dizzy of and turned it 180 and problem solved.

If you pull it off the tangs are offset. If you put it 180* off it should have been very obvious when you tried to push the distributor in the hole

That's how he f**ked up his original dizzy. It'll fit "forced in".

Forced in? yeah right it slid right in i didn't even have to try. my original one the shaft in it had a grove in it and one of the seals was bad and it put oil in my dizzy so i replaced it.

Yeah marking the base of the distributor (at the centre top bolt) along to where it's connected to the engine is very important to keep timing. I as well used a ruler and sharp metal object to make the mark. I also found that it also helps, before removing the distributor, to take the cap off as well so one can see the position of the rotor (another reference point), so just incase if it is accidently rotated one generally knows the position that it should be in, and this will help to place the distributor back into its slot!
