Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
So I just changed my timing belt on my 94 gsr, set the cams mark straight with the head (My motor is missing the rear timing belt cover).
Warmed up, jumped the service connector, dizzy all the way advanced i'm still at 10degrees with the red mark.
When I set it to 0 and it line up with the RED one and when I set it to 16 it line up with the WHITE one. Which is the opposite as the spec. Am I a tooth off?
...pop the vavle cover off and set the crank to TDC(white mark) and the cams mark line up -o- -o- straight with the head...help???
o ya and it has ITR cams, chipped p28 and skunk2 manifold

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
so the marks on the cam gears match up with each other, correct? (the rear cover has nothing to do with timing)
i would remove the lower cover and check to make sure the timing gear matches the mark on the oil pump.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
Yes, this just happened to me. My timing was at 37*, yah I know wtf. So anyway, I retarded the timing all the way the dizzy allowed me to turn it and I still couldnt get it to 16. It was off a tooth on intake and exhaust.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
OK I triple check the timing even took the crank pulley out and redid the timing. But I still having the same problem. Could it be the dizzy? Never set the ignition timing on this car so no cues if it was off before or not. Cams mark are dead straight when crank is at tdc..

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
ok this one is when the crank is at tdc(the single white mark). I did a few timing belt already and i've been setting the timing like that with no problem. I'm gonna try a different timing gun.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
did the timing on my gsr motor with no timing gun.
just lined up the cam gears to the block
matched up the crank to its mark
made sure the rotor was pointing at cylinder one
made sure firing order was correct and bam started up like a champ. no timing gun needed.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
The car start and runs good. No power lost or anything. I just can't time it to +-16 degree.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
You have to drive around for at least 15 minutes. You car will take more than a few minutes to warm up and fully advance the timing.
The distributor rotor doesn't fire instantaneously, it has a window of firing times. You can tell by looking at the rotor, it is like a wedge.
Basically, when your car is not at operating temp, the ECU automatically retards the timing.
If you have a OBD1 integra, jumping the service connector is not required, I have no idea about OBD2 tegs, it should actually say under your hood.
If you have your stock hood, pop it up, and it will tell you the procedure for ignition timing. Mine read at 10 degrees with the distributor fully advanced, and I was wondering wtf was wrong. I took it out for a 15 minute drive and the timing light worked properly.

Re: Changed timing belt cant set ignition timing
-Jump Service Connector
-Loosen 3 bolts on dizzy
-Warm engine up to operating temp
-Make sure idle is at 750 +/- 50 rpms
-Connect your gun
Then:
Does the timing light you are using have an adjustable setting?
If so, you can do it two ways:
1st method: Put the gun @ 0* on the adjustable setting, then adjust the dizzy to line up with the pink mark (Middle of 3 marks)
OR
2st Method: Put the gun @ 16* on the adjustable setting, then adjust the dizzy to line up with the white mark (TDC)
OR
If you gun doesnt have an adjustable setting: You would do the same thing as the 1st method because the gun is technically on 0* because you cant adjust anything.
