Im re-timing my car. First i had it on the sero mark , then i heard it needs to be at the red mark. Am i better off timing to stock? is that the zero degree mark? i was trying to time it to the red 14 mark but the belt wont go on. i aligned it to the mark but one sprocket was off a tooth. then i checked and the light showed i was way off. my timing gun has degrees on it or numbers whats that for? help please thanks.

when installing the timing belt the engine should be set to TDC. crank at single white mark and cams pointing up and side marks aligned. get that correct before even turning the car on or picking up a timing light.

the timing light is used to set ignition timing. set **** to zero and adjust dizzy until the 16* mark on crank lines up with the pointer on the lower timing cover. alternatively if you set the **** to 16*, the timing pointer should line up with tdc mark on crank.

so i dont set the crank to the red mark with the belt off?then put the belt on..

when you say "red mark" i think you are refering to the 16* BTDC mark so no do not use that mark. you need the TDC mark, labeled 0BTC in this pic

i lined up everything but the dizzy wouldnt go to the 16 mark what does that mean?

if you are positive the cam timing is correct then maybe something is wrong with the dizzy, is it an oem unit?

It means that your cam timing is off. Double check that all the marks line up.

a guy didnt it for me and the cams were 180 degrees off oops! its good but it still stutters on the hwy.

Your valves may be bent.

dont mean to thread jack but Im having similar issues. Im trying to adjust the ignition timing on my b16b. I have a timing light with the advance ****. Yesterday I left the **** at zero and lined the RED mark on the crank up with the marker on the timing cover. My car falls on its face ~3500-4000 rpm. What must I do to get the timing correct? Leave the **** at zero but set it to the white mark on the crank?

you need to check your cam timing first. follow the diagram and make sure everything lines up


then set the ignition timing as you described. **** at zero, crank pulley at red 16* mark.

i got it lined up and set to the 16 mark. my car does the same when i want to accelerate gradually..then power comes back when i push the pedal all the way.

You guys are crossing the terminal down by the computer to check your timing, right?

guys if you set your timing after overhauling the complete motor, should piston 1 and 4 valves be open?
i have my crank on tdc and put my cams to tdc but my 2 and 3 pistons valves are opening.tdc on crank 1 and 4 piston is up.

yes I had the terminals connected. I dont have that engine anymore as I'm getting another soon. It had msd ignition control on it and that's what ruined the dizzy then the timing im guessing.
