Mega-Rare NSX Type S Heads to Auction, Be Still Our Beating Hearts

Factory lightweight NSX still has air conditioning and a radio – and wild orange Recaros.

If you grew up playing Gran Turismo like we did, then there’s no doubt that you’re aware of all of the different permutations of the Honda NSX. While the NSX-R is nothing short of legendary, we’ve got a soft spot for the NSX Type S. Imagine our surprise when we found a real 1999 Honda NSX Type S offered for sale on Hemmings.

The NSX Type S was something like a track toy that could still fulfill daily driver duties. It offered a stiffer suspension than the standard NSX, Recaro seats, a titanium shift knob, and a unique MOMO steering wheel. It boasted a weight savings of nearly 100 pounds without sacrificing amenities such as the stereo and air conditioning.

A Type S Zero was also available that reduced weight by an additional 100 plus pounds by deleting the air conditioning, radio, and some sound deadening materials. Both the NSX Type S and the Type S Zero were, unfortunately for us, exclusive to Japan.

Another feature unique to both cars was mesh grilles on both the engine cover and side air intakes. All in all, these changes may not sound like much, but these small tweaks took an already great car and made it nearly perfect.

This silver example features a stunning black and orange interior, offering a fantastic contrast to its understated exterior.

This example is no garage queen – it’s got 94,545 kilometers on the odometer. That’s a lot for a Japanese-market car. However, the interior still looks great and the body shows no obvious blemishes from what we can see in the the beautiful photos.

This car is missing its special BBS wheels, which made up a substantial proportion of the weight reduction. In its place, a previous owner fitted a set of Volk CE28s. The deep bronze finish looks attractive when combined with the silver paintwork of this NSX.

According to the listing, it’s one of just 248 NSX Type S models ever built. It’s made its way to the UK, and will be offered at the upcoming Silverstone Classics 2019 sale. The sale takes place at the legendary Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, and runs from July 27th through the 28th.
