If You Ever Wanted A First Generation NSX, You Better Buy One Now
Purchasing this timeless, elegant, piece of history is not something you want to miss out on, especially with the way prices are going.
The release of first generation NSX was a pivotal moment in automotive history. Honda was at the time in the golden era of its performance vehicles and the forthcoming of a RWD, mid-engined supercar from the company put the automotive world to its knees. Its goal was simple, beat Ferrari at being a Ferrari. When it was released in the early nineties, it literally made every other luxury supercar on the road rethink its process. It was styled like a modern fighter jet and it revved to a glorious 8,000 RPM with a sound reminiscent of F1 (thanks to Honda’s heavy involvement in the sport at the time). It quickly was understood that there would never be another car on the road quite like it, ever.
30 years later in our modern times, people have kept that mentality. The prices of 1st generation NSX’s over the past few years especially have begone to skyrocket. Consider the fact that the MSRP of a NSX in 1991 was around $60,000, which is $112,000 or so in today’s money. That’s a entry level supercar price, as the NSX was suppose to be. This is why every time we see another NSX being sold on Bring A Trailer, the price gets higher and higher every time. Take this beautiful Formula Red NSX as an example. Its condition is looks near immaculate and is obviously a very well taken car of at 85,000 or so miles. Even being a modified vehicle, the car still sold for $51,000. Let’s put this in perspective.
Last year, a 1991 Formula Red 2600-mile example did not meet reserve at $73,000. This year, a car with 80,000 more miles sold for less than $20,000 of that missed reserve. Now let’s bring us to this year’s special examples. Another 1991 Formula Red car, sporting yet again an extremely low 2,800 miles, is up for sale for the next 5 days and already has a bid of $75,000 with the obvious potential for a lot more. This car has no reserve. You might think, there is no way NSX’s are selling for $100,000 in today’s landscape. Well, we aren’t surprised to say that that is far from the truth. Two months ago, a 187-mile 1994 Brooklands Green NSX sold for an outstanding $151,000.
We warned you in the beginning, if you ever wanted to buy an NSX, the prices are literally creeping higher by the minute, so we suggest you guys to start convincing your significant others fast. Having had the privilege of driving one of these fine pieces of automotive excellence, I can without a doubt say that there is truly something special about the NSX.
