Em1 problems with reverse
Hey whats up. Having problems with only reverse. 1-5 work perfect and have no issues going in. At times it is difficult to put in reverse so i let off the clutch and press it in, to get it to work. Biggest issue is when i back up car feels like it jumps/skips. It doesn't do it all the time either so not sure what it could be. Tried a new shift linkage and no change. Searched and only saw problems with 5th and reverse since they are together, but not just reverse. Trying to get some ideas to see if its a easy fix. Have no experience working on transmissions but might open this one up if its something i can possibly fix.

Re: Em1 problems with reverse
I purchased a used tranny that was said to have "no reverse". I never drove with it damaged and neither did the person I bought it from.
When I opened it, several teeth on the reverse gear AND reverse idler were either chipped or sheared off. There are some photos here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/transmission-drivetrain-127/s80-ls-tranny-no-reverse-3139037/
I'm guessing yours may look the same based on your description.

Re: Em1 problems with reverse
Finally had a chance to open up the tranny. First time opening up a tranny so don't have any experience. From what I see bottom of the reverse idler gear looks bad so i will replace that. Not sure if the 1/2 sleeve and the actual mainshaft needs to be replaced? Issue I had was reverse skipped/jumped but not as bad everytime. No problems with 1-5 but recently noticed 1st having a slight change, almost feeling the same but very minimal while taking off only.
Anything else you might notice from these picture i should look at?

Hard to get a super good look, but from those pics I don't see any glaring major defects. The teeth and sliders always look like that. Put it in reverse and rotate the mainshaft to feel how it turns.

Re: Em1 problems with reverse
The 1/2 sleeve always looks that way. Everything looks perfectly normal from the pics. Idk what could cause it to "jump" . I would have to ride in the car to see what you mean. With the transmission together, I would put it in reverse and spin the mainshaft and see if it catches on anything as you spin it

Re: Em1 problems with reverse
Late post but I did end up fixing the problem. I replaced the reverse idler gear and got a synchrotech 1-2 hardened sleeve. The teeth on the stock 1-2 sleeve looked nothing like the new sleeve. Reverse works fine now
