Possible ignition switch problem?
Hi everyone. I'm so glad this site exists!!
I have a 1994 Civic Si that died on my way to work today. It started fine with the remote starter but quit when I pressed the break to switch to reverse. After a couple times I got I started with the key and I made it a few minutes before it died again. Needless to say I had to call a tow truck and back home I went.
It will still start up fine with the remote starter but dies when I press the break. It will start by turning the key but dies after I let the key flick back. Even when the key is turned twice nothing turns on (radio, lights, heat, etc). Also when the key is turned I cannot switch gears....it is stuck in park. In order to put it into neutral today so 2 guys could push me out of traffic's way I had to keep turning the key and holding it in order to quickly switch the gear before it died.
At first I thought the remote starter was messing something up (car not recognizing the key or something) but my dad figures it's the ignition switch.
Any suggestions?

Re: Possible ignition switch problem?
The car stalling once the key is returned to RUN (II) sounds like the typical ignition switch failure. I see this mostly on accords in very cold climates.
How long has the auto-start been installed? Who installed it? Sounds like you could have two problems. I'm willing to bet the installation of the auto-start is the problem.

I live in Saskatchewan so it's cold right now. The remote start was installed 8 years ago. This is the first time it's happened.

Sounds like the Run (II) pad on the ignition switch is destroyed, unbolt from the lock cylinder and pop the plastic top off of it. The problem will be very evident. Replace the Ignition Switch.
