How to set ignition timing
Hey guys,
I noticed there is no how to to setup ignition timing so I thought I could at least get one started because I've been having major problems and think I've finally found out how to do it
First off, set your mechanical timing
line up the vee notch and pointer with the white mark on your crank pulley and line up your cam gear correctly
Now the ignition timing
Tools;
12 mm
small piece of 20 gauge wire w/ both ends stripped
Timing light
Steps:
The car must be warm
Under the passenger kick panel theres a little clip that looks like something needs to plug into it, plug your wire into this to complete the circuit
Now connect your timing light.
It should have three leads
one is for battery +
one for battery -
and one clip for spark plug wire number one, I put this one near the distributor end
With the car running point the light at your crank pulley.
You have to line up the vee notch and pointer with one of two marks on the crank pulley
Here's the confusing part,
on the hood label, my crx si reads 18 btdc
What this means is that my timing light, set at 18 will line up with the white mark
Set at 0 it will line up with the red mark
If your car is off loosen the distributor and slide it around till you manage to line up the marks.
tighten the distributor
unplug the wire
remove timing light
DONE
PLease post feedback
Thanks for reading

Re: How to set ignition timing
When looking at the crank pulley there's three lines, the middle being 16 degrees and the other two on the sides are +/- 2 degree's. If you're car is having idling problems are runs funny, setting the ignition timing is gonna be tricky.

Re: How to set ignition timing
88-89 crx "clip" have a different location.
they are located in the engine bay. right side of engine bay. has yellow cap.
90-91 "clip" is located to where you said.

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: How to set ignition timing
I am sorry but there is Soo much misinformation this should just be deleted. The reason there isn't very many "How TO's" is because people either use their manuals or know how to do it. If I get the time I will make one, because this one disturbs me deeply.

Re: How to set ignition timing
I made this hoping someone will make one
Google came up with too many different answers
edit
I have a 60 buck craftsman light
I set it to 18 and line up the white line. If I try to line up the red line, my dizzy won't reach it
My friend has a snap on one
He set it to 18 and lines up the red line.
Both were pretty dead on
craftsman 60 buck
snap on 300 bucks

nm found this post by tippyman
They should look like this:

The three lines together are your timing marks, the one by itself is the TDC mark. To get the timing right at factory specs, use the line in the middle of the three lines.
however, does anyone have a pic of this plug under passenger kick panel that needs to be jumped?
nm found that too, you guys are awesome, lol
