i have a 1992 honda civic hatch with a OBD1 GSR Swap in it. I put a all new valve tran in the car.. Supertech dual valve springs, retainers, and valves.. I Also put blox stage 2 cams and skunk2 cam gears in it.. We wired everything up and for some odd reason it will not hit Vtec.. We called blox too see if the cams was vtec killers and there not.. We hot wired vtec from cyloniod to the positive side of battery and vtec clicked and opened so we ran it down the street and it kicked in hard, then we pulled over unconnected the wire from battery and took off it did not kick it?? So I checked my ECU and put it in my buddies car that also has a GSR and vtec hit with my P72 and he said it hit hard than his chipped P28.. But for some odd reason vtec will not kick in my car.. it is totally in time and im getting oil pressure to the head.. I'm getting perfect pressure.. I have had a lot of people look at this and it is mind blowing everyone, is there anyone out there that has any clue???????

it has 41 which is a map sensor which we replaced and it is still throwing the code and 3 which is a O2..

i do believe those are the codes.. thats what the Haynes manual said

Code 3 is a MAP sensor. 41 is the primary 02 sensor.

You need to fix your MAP code. The MAP is 1 of 3 MAJOR sensors in determining fuel curve. VTEC may not work without a MAP sensor.

Do you have your MAP and TPS connectors switched up? They are the same connector.

Fix your CELs. Then try for VTEC.

Yes It will. At heavy throttle, the ECU ignores the O2 sensor. It essentially runs in open loop. The only closed loop function it looks for is the CTS showing up at operating temp.

The 02 sensor only works under cruise, light throttle, or no throttle conditions under CLOSED loop.

we replaced the map sensor and it throw the code again thats what confused me.. i went and bought a brand new one and it still throwing the code.. and i am going to get an o2 sensor today.. do u think possible by passing some sensors and running 2 lines from the ECU to the vtec cylinoid and to the vtec oil pressure sensor will make it kick it just to see if thats where my problem is?? or am i sounding retarded right now


and no i dont have map and tps switched already thought of that.. even tried switching them too see if i did..

To activate VTEC, the ECU needs:

-coolant at operating temp
-VTEC software, hardware, and wiring in good working order
-Speed signal (above 15mph)
-RPM signal (and RPM up to trigger speed)
-Oil press
-TPS signal above certain %


The MAP, TPS, and IAT are tied into the fuel map. Which is tied into VTEC software.

The ECU will not operate VTEC if above functions are not met. An aftermarket peice like a VAFC or other VTEC controllers....or a method of ghetto rigging will make VTEC work, but you STILL NEED A MAP SENSOR.

Again, check that your MAP and TPS plugs are not switched. If you bought a brand new MAP sensor, it's probably not the sensor. Check the wiring.

yeah cause i double checked the TPS And Map sensors too see if i switched them and it i was right i had them in correct i even tried switching them that didn't work at all lol.. but its in correct and the vtec worked before i put all new valve tran in it,and i am kinda at a holt right now.. the car runs fine and smooth as hell but will not touch vtec at all.. i am 100% sure about that

Try checking the other stuff I described.

but anyway this is my last for the day but keep a look out for this post i will check the things you said and if i have any more problems i will post tomorrow..

And answer this some guy sold me stage 2 blox cams, and there not vtec killers we checked.. but he said my car wont hit vtec until its tuned.. because i was thinking about putting stock cams in too see if it would hit.. but i am wondering if he is just saying it wont hit till its tuned so he can get his money or is that true..

Keep i look out tomorrow i will be on if i got more problems..

iduno. if the cams are bigger, you'd assume you'd hear a bigger change in sound. But he could be right. B18C VTEC is at like 4500RPM. Try getting it tuned. The problems could be resolved during tuning anyway.
