HELP! VTEC NOT ENGAGING!
friends 96 integra gsr, obd2a, p72 ecu
vtec wont engage, theres no cel, vtec solenoid seems to be working (i touched the solenoid to the power terminal on the battery w/ a wire and the solenoid was clicking), butterflies work i can hear it at 5700, low end torque feels fine just no top end (no vtec
), im wondering why its not throwing any codes like 21 or 22. im planning on wiring up a vtec light to see if the ecu is sending out a signal to the solenoid. is there anything else i should look for?

i have a question, does the obd2a ecu's have the same pinouts as the obd1 ecu's? is the vtec solenoid still at a4 and is oil pressure still at d6.
I just had this issue with my turbo B16, but it happened slowly. A couple times vtec engaged late, then sputtering, now not at all. Car runs and drives fine on lo cam. OEM vtec wiring looks fine, solenoid tested just like yours. I suspect that the little o-ring seal under the middle cam cap may have gone bad; maybe yours is missing?
I recently jumped another car off with mine which immediately killed my car. Anyone think that could have caused a problem?

well i tried the vtec switch. i bought a cheap on/off switch from autozone. hooked up one wire to the vtec solenoid, one to the ground terminal, one to the power terminal. i tested out the switch hitting it on/off and i can hear the solenoid click so i assume that the solenoid is working. started up the car (no cel), let it warm up to operating temperature, drove around a bit, then did a second gear pull and hit the switch at 5000 rpms...nothing. vtec didnt kick in, it ran like it did before. the first time i wired the switch, i had the wire jumped to the solenoid harness wire, so i tried wiring the switch straight to the solenoid instead of jumping it from the harness wire (hopefully that made sense). started up the car and it threw a cel, i knew it was gonna be either code 21 or 22. i did a 2nd gear pull and still no vtec but it had fuel cut around 6500 which i knew was gonna happen. so i went back home and wired the switch to the harness, pulled the code (code 22) resetted the ecu (now no more codes). im clueless right now.
Well i think you narrowed it down. Replace the solenoid with one you are sure that works.
Verify your oil level and pressure.
Also, remember that on at stock engine, VTEC will not engage if you are moving less than 20mph, or the car is not fully warmed up.

is it normal for the solenoid to only click once when i apply power to it? i always thought it would click rapidly. if thats the case then perhaps it's a bad solenoid.

sounds like a solenoid problem..check ur wiring to the ecu if you get a chance..i have obd2-1 converter n my vtec wire fell off but the ecu never threw a code unless i tried to take it past 5300rpms...but i hope u can get that fixed...if u want i can hook u up with a guy who is real helpful over email n does a lot of wiring, tuning, n ecu trouble shooting..lemme know
I had a 93 prelude with H22, The vtec would only work when car was cold. After it warmed up it would not engage VTEC. I tried many things to figure out problem none worked. Finaly got a Honda tech to talk to me and he said check the pickup in the oil pan to see if the screen is clogged. So I took the pan off Sprayed some brake cleaner on strainer and it was clogged with gummy ****. The Vtec worked every time after that. Hope this will help you out.
dued im having the same problem...i gotta h22a in a 96 coupe but i have no v tec and my rev limiter is popping at like 6800 rpms...if you find anything out please email me a prelude19912000@yahoo.com thanks a million
