Default CEL then burning smell, then no power

I was driving down 45 south here in houston area going around 80, then cel comes on. I think its the cat actting up again, bet when i press the gas to pass a car.. the car hits 2.8 rpms and slams on its face trying to speed up. So im thinking it was the tranny going out on me on the freeway. So i keep it at 70 and keep going stright, and next i know it i smell burning smell get stronger. So i turn on my blinkers and head to a gas station. I refilled my fuilds(water, oil) and get back on road. runs better but its slow as a geo carrying 6 people, and it was just me and my g/f and she's tiny. I looked to my led lights i had set up to light up with (vtec, brake lights, tranny, and fog lights)

When i gave it gas it down shifted, but no vtec at all and the car felt like the load was too heavy for its own good. So I put things together that my vtec system had died on me, which explaned the cel and the problem at certan rpm ranges.

I stop and got me bite to eat then got back in the car. The vtec light came back on again and i got all my power back aswell.

im like "wth"
What i wanna know is why my vtec system died on me while driving 80 and the burning smell came from.

80: Exhaust Gas Recirculation
sounds like your egr is fucked up. your vtec might not be working because your engine could be in limp mode.

I am not so sure about the EGR system... it should normally be operating at 80... and it causes a small drop in power, but nothing noticable. First off, to the poster... We need to know MODEL AND YEAR!!!!!! Also, it would help alot if you would pull the code, to figure out what the car is trying to tell you

80 on 45? Maybe in the slow lane. You'll get run the hell over going that slow on 45 south.

Did your CEL light stay on or did it go away too? What year, make, model?

UPDATE-

MODEL - Honda Accord 98 EX coupe~

i went to autozone today to get my codes pulled, and i got this code i never seen or heard before. It had to do with wrong mixture of air and gas ratio sensor or mix?? I didnt get the time to wright the right code cuz the guy was in a hurry before i got to read it all out.

Today my car drove fine after i got that code deleted, but im worried if i hit freeways again will i have the same issue... in other words it has to do with the system before the motor.

What are these led's that you are talking about that you had hooked up??? I would maybe check those connections if that is an addition that you did.

Was it possibly the o2 sensor throwing a code, that will reduce performance but not noticeable like you are saying.

Also what kind of burning smell is it? More of like an oil burning or electrical?

these leds i hooked up was more for "info" for me while i was driving since i have had problems with many things with my car.

I got the vtec, brake, tranny, fog lights postive running from there sources. They all run to the same ground wire i have made and grounded to a screw nearby the fuse box. Thats the first thing i thought that one of my wires got melted and messed something up. When I stop that night to eat I tried to move my wires around in the bay to see if anything happend.

The O2 is only like 5 months old and its OEM, and the cat is broken so i did the spark plug hack to get it to run right. I did all this 0ver 9,000 miles ago and got the cel until last night. Thats why im so confused about this.
~that was my first guess when the light came one. But i forgot add the burning oil smell and the sizzeling i got at the gas station when i opened the hood.

I would honestly disconnect all of your led's and go from there. It is always easier to eliminate the aftermarket issues first, and if it still does it and throws a code then see what code is being thrown and go from there.

It could also be your cat is clogged and that is the smell that you are smelling, and since it is clogged it is causing performance to not be as good.
