B20vtec Build Plans

B20vtec Build Plans
So I'm planning on building a b20vtec motor for my EJ8 and have came up with a excel document with part #'s and prices according to each engine component. These prices seem to be high to me, lmk what you think. When I start building my head I will part out the stock components so I should expect some extra money toward the new parts that will be put in their place. And I'll be selling the completely stock d16y8 full swap that came with it. I want all the imput and advice I can get. This will be a long term build which is why I chose this swap for all of it's potential. I will also be "filling" the block and boosting down the road, but this is what I've got so far. Im shooting for 200-220whp after I build my head.

Re: B20vtec Build Plans
Just a suggestion, but if your even thinking of tearing the block down, dont waste $800 on a fresh jdm engine, just look around for a used block. A used block with with new rs machine pistons and rings, bearings, arp rod bolts, and even some machine work i.e decking if necessary, honing/boring, and line honing for the rods would cost about the same if not less than buying a complete jdm b20 from hmotors. Also, you cant use b16 headstuds, im pretty sure you need gsr headstuds.

Re: B20vtec Build Plans
heres a good recipete for a reliable 230+whp, might not meet everyones budget tho.
b16/gsr ported head(from a good source) -$600-1000
blox b cams, skunk 2 pro1, pro2 -new $500-700 -used $200-450
tri y header,smsp or ssr headers $200-1000
Skunk2 manifold or jg victor x (cut open n port) parts and labor $400-500
68mm TB -new $100
b20 block -used $350-450
84-85mm rs machine pistons $250-300
stock rods w/ arp rod bolts -$100
machine work -$200-500 depending
I have seen this type of set-up make around 230-240whp many times. great for street power. lots of fun!

- $200~400 for B20 block
- $250 S2K intake manifold
B20 blocks are pretty cheap and you won't be reving to 8500 rpm so just get a P30 IM. BAM....saved $500 bucks

A low mile B20B L/B can be have for $450-$500. Where's the stock B16B I/M and T/B?
Stock CTR head and RS Machine piston would be a sufficient budget build.

Re: B20vtec Build Plans
Used B20s go for $300-$400 in my neck of the woods. Shortblocks even less than that.
Dont waste your $ on a JDM motor just to tear it down and replace everything inside it...
Shop around. Good deals are everywhere, you just gotta know where to look and have a little patience...
I'd avoid the skunk pro series cam gears. Heard too many horror stories about them.
Depending on how far down the road and how much you plan on boosting, you may want to look at other (forged and/or low compression) pistons...

Re: B20vtec Build Plans
Definitely shop around. I bought my B20 block off here for $150 shipped (cali). Came w/block, rods, crank, mains, pan, windage tray, pick up. I replaced the oil pump, water pump, gasket. used stock ls rods w/ARP bolts, RS itr pistons. I used supertech springs, retainers, valves (paid $340), Buddy club 4 cams w/skunk2 gears (paid $600), blox IM ($150), professional products 68mm TB (bought used for $120)...
after having a local shop (New Kid Cylinder Heads in KC, sucks *** btw) hog out my head... I mean port it, I made 215 (on a dyno that reads low as heck).
point of my post, shop around, dont pay "retail" for everything if you dont have to.
