Okay, I'm planning on building a rather powerful turbo engine. But since I'm going to be rebuilding almost the whole thing anyway, I'm arguing over the VTEC question.

Whatever engine I get, it's going to be re-sleeved, new pistons and rods (lower compression), girdle, upgraded valve-train, the whole nine yards. AND a big-*** turbo.

I was originally thinking about using an LS block because of its slightly larger displacement. But now I'm thinking that if I use a GSR block it's gonna be resleeved anyway, so could I just have it bored out to the displacement of the LS or will that compromise the cylinder walls? If I used the GSR block, then I would still have the option of VTEC, which I wouldn't have on the LS (unless I did an LS/VTEC which I really don't want to do). Please don't suggest the B18C5, I will be replacing everything that makes the B18C5 special so there is no reason to get it.

Basically I'm arguing this. Which will get me more power? That little extra bit of displacement, or VTEC?

Any Opinions?

 

If I were you, I'd sleeve an LS block and do LS/VTEC. Best of both worlds.

Get a B16 block, they are cheap as hell, and once you have it resleeveed, you could have the displacement of the LS but with the r/s ratio of a B16.

 

Nope, although they are both called B18's the displacement of the LS (B18B, 1834cc) is just SLIGHTLY higher than the GSR (B18C1, 1797cc).

If you will look at a nice little number to the left, you will see that I have at least 680 posts on this board, I'm not new to the honda thing Yeah, checking websites and searching boards is all well and good, but nothing beats the straight up opinions of the Honda-Tech guys on my specific issue! Jared, what is the r/s ratio of the B16 vs. the B18B? I know the ratio of the B18B isn't optimal, but I don't know the numbers.

I think the B18B had an r/s of 1.54 or something to that matter.....I know that the B16 has a r/s of 1.74.

The B16/B18B and B18C all have a bore size of 81mm....the difference is the stroke.

You could get a B20 block since you want to rebuild the damn thing anyway and it has a bore of 84mm already.

 

i say save money on the block and go ls or b16 (much much cheaper than gsr's) and you can always have 84mm sleeves put in either if you're wanting more displacement.. sure 84mm in a b16 won't give you the same disp. as they would in a 1.8L but it's all about boost now right?

 

Get a b20b block and a b17a crank...then resleeve the block to like 87mm and u will have a 2.0 with a almost perfect r/s of 1.73...perfect for turbo...check this site out http://www.crvtec.com

 

I believe that once you put the 1.7 crank in the 2.0 block, it nets you a motor with about 1.8l of displacement.

the B17 crank in a B20 block nets you about 1.9L, however, you need custom rods for that applicaton. Why don't you just sleeve a B16 block, bore it to 84.5mm, then you can use CRV overbore pistons, with B16 rods.
