- get a pair of worn out axles and cut them in half
- take the cv's and cups apart and clean all the grease out of them, a parts washing bin will clean them up very nicely.
- put the car on it's wheels @ driving/racing height. (full weight and compressed suspension) - It's easiest on a drive on hoist but you can do it on a two post hoist if you are creative. The main objective is to put the suspension exactly where it will be as the car is driving.

- install the axle halves back in without the boots - this is tricky, take your time!! You'll need a hand because the cv's will fall out of the inner cups very easily without boots holding them together.

Now you have to determine where you want the inner CV's to be while the car is in motion. To do this, Bottom out the inner half of the axle pushing towards the tranny and then pull it back towards you about .75" to 1.25" (these measurements are off the top of my head, use your best judgment).


The inner cup of the axle is designed to allow the CV's to slide in and out along the axles axis (you'll see what I mean if you didn't already know). As the steering wheel turns and the suspension compresses and decompresses the axles slides within the inner(tranny) cup.

Now that you have established where you want the inner CV to be you can now determine how long you need to make the axle shaft. Pictured below is how to mock up a shorter axle. A piece of pipe is used to keep the two halves of the dummy axle fairly concentric. A few good tacks will keep your mock up assembly together.



At this point you have a complete <FONT SIZE="5"><u>*mockup*</u></FONT> of your axles. Triple check that the axles work under all suspension and steering situations by raising and lowering the car and steering in booth directions.

<FONT SIZE="5">do not be an idiot and attempt to drive the car on welded axles.</FONT> All you have left to do is remove your mockup axles, dissemble them, and bring mockup axle shafts to a good machine shop that can cut splines.

I agree.. plus you can choose what metal you want to use when you have the axle shafts machined.. i beleive mine are 4130.

Yeah...

so I went through your post and followed it step-by-step... but then I put them on and drove around before I read this part. You owe me $1,500 for a new tranny and axles.

what about vibration? arent axles balanced?

 

Where would vibration be introduced at?

After you make the mock-up, you're supposed to get a new one made.

You're not supposed to use the ones that are welded together.

 

oh got you its just a mock up. i thought you where running the axles like that...haha
