Default Project: F20 transplant into AE86 Levin

I am so pleased that I have found this forum.

4 weeks ago I blew up my heavily tuned 4AGE engine at the track

I have spent the last month deliberating as to if I should build up another 190/200bhp 1.6 4AGE engine or simply take the plunge and install an s2000 motor and transmission into my car.

The costs involved in building such a high output 1.6L NA motor vs. the reliabiliy of an F20 and transmission is a bit of a no brainer considering I get power beyond what was possible with the 4AGE engine.

Many AE86 purists see this as totally wrong - but from my point of view I am not all that bothered what the engine says on its cam cover providing its strong enough to cope with lots of track and drifting events.

So - whilst having not purchased the engine yet I am 99% certain this is what I'll be doing over the next few months. It will be a lot of work but hopefully I can pull this off.

Does anyone know where I may be able to get a dyno plot from a totally standard F20 and F22 ? I would just like to overlay them over a 4AGE plot so I can compare a few things.

Thanks in advance

Thankyou

There is a company in the USA that will carry out this conversion but it doesn't really help me being in the UK.

This is a car that was recently converted...and you can read all about it here on Club4AG

Damn - I can't wait

Any information you may have is greatly appreciated. The biggest issue we have is getting the engine at the right height and far enough back in the engine bay as to not upset the balance of the car.

there's been a few of them done.. i believe there is a huge thread on here somewhere about it... do a search for it.....

as for the dyno plot you'll probably find it on s2ki....

and for your purists they are all dumb... show them the best motoring video with the ae86 with the f20c.. and that thing is quick

Well,

yesterday I secured myself an '04 F22c engine that has only done 4000 miles. It came with all ancillaries, transmission, full wiring loom, instrument cluster, inlet and exhaust manifolds, propshaft etc.

So, now I just have to wait a few weeks until we start work popper. In the meantime I just have the fuel lines left to remove from the tranny tunnel and we can get cracking with the gas axe

There are some parts we need to get made such as prop shaft and radiator but we wont be able to do these until further into the project.

wish me luck LOL.

All the suspension/bracing on the car is already fully sorted

Polly Bushed All round
Tokico HTS Fully Adjustable short stroke suspension with TRD Springs
Cusco Negative Camber roll center adjusters
Cusco Front and Rear Anti-rollbars
Cusco Pillow ball top mounts
Cusco Front Strut brace
Cusco Rear strut brace
Cusco Rear 4point links
Cusco Lateral/Panard Rod 5th link
Cusco Brake Cylinder anti-flex bracket
Nams Front Bulkhead support brackets

At the moment it has a half roll cage but that will be coming out soon for a full welded in one. Also had TRD solid engine and gearbox mounts but we wont be needing those anymore

An AE86 weighs about 960kilos fully loaded.

The sound deadening I smashed from the floor and firewall was about 25kilos

The car will have only part of the dashboard, no interior parts other than seats and door cards.

I have a FRP trunk (thats how you guys say it right ?) lid with a plexiglass window that has saved about another 15kilos, and I will probably use plexiglass rear quarter windows too. Remove the full sized battery and install an FRP/Carbon bonnet and there is another 20kilos gone. I have also removed the entire airconditioning system compressor and radiator. Once the full rollcage is installed we will gain some of this weight back though.

The F20 motor and transmission weighs about 14kilos more than the 4AGE engine and gearbox.

It would be nice if the car came out about 900 kilos when finished. That would give me about 270bhp/tonne which should make it quite interesting.

my brother is close friends with gabe who owns techno toys. they're local to us in Placerville.

i believe he recently sold his ae86. within his circle of friends, there are a few 1st gen celicas, a few ae86's and our datsun 510, all powered by f20c's.

RCrew Racing is doing this right now. they have the car almost done, just doing body work and paint. to get the motor at the right height there were spacers for the front crossmember to be mounted lower so there was no conflict with the hood and valve cover. this i believe is a kit you can buy in Japan.. i think, i may be wrong though. VTEC Club (Best Motoring) had the black coupe with F20.

That 510 is lovely. There is a guy in the UK with a really really nice 510 that is now SR20DET powered.

The car on VTEC club is owned by HotSTAFF I believe. I would really like some photographs of Gabes car with the cross member in place minus the engine - but he won't send me one LOL. I would use the company in the USA to do the work for me but as I'm in the UK its just not practical.

I've emailed Evolution a few times which are the people that did the conversion and they must be real busy as they dont reply. If I cant by the entire conversion I would still like to buy some of the parts they use in the conversion.

That's a very nice Dime, but if it was up to me, it would bear the 13B-REW instead of the F20.

Be ready for plenty of custom work- check out Club4ag.com and search those threads for F20c swap. The mounting shouldn't be too big of a deal with custom mounts, but like the 20v swap you probably need to punch in the firewall a bit and those who have done it said there is transmission tunnel cutting modding for the tranny. Also you may or may not have to to remount the steering rack,I believe T3 did with their swap ... IMO I think this swap would be totally worth the work- go for it!!
