Will a knock sensor retard timing w/o tripping CEL??
I think I might have split my knock sensor while disconnecting it. The CEL has not come on but my idle gets really irradic, unless I rev past 2k.
If it's not the knock sensor, then my problem has to lie with my tps. Thanks.

the job of the knock sensor is to pull the timing when it detects detonation, if the sensor is malfunctioning but still reports itself to the ECM that could cause problems.

Alright, I can confirm that the knock sensor will retard timing even if it does not trip the CEL.
My car now does show code 23 which is the KS and if anyone has a conversion harness out there, please let me know, I think I'll just switch to a p28

So when you have knock/detonation, the computer will automatically retard the timing? To what though? And when it does, does it stay like that or would you still have to retard it yourself to prevent it from happening again?

Not fully sure on how far the ecu kicks back the timing, but its about 15 degress or so from what I remember. Its lame, you can totally feel the loss in power/hesitation when the ECU pulls back on the timing too. It doesn't stay stuck at 15 degrees, it only kicks it back whenever the ecu detects knocking. The only real way to prevent the ecu from pulling back on timing is by checking to see what your ignition timing is set to (should be set between 16-18 degrees), or by simply using an ecu that has a disabled KS.
