Default DIY: Footwell LEDs on/off with Door

There doesn't seem to be enough information on how to wire footwell LED's to come on/off with the door open/closed. If you want to do this, then you will want to continue reading.

I did this on my 98 DC, but this can be done with any car that has a dome light. I chose this route, cus I didn't want to take apart my inner panels to get to the door switch. Also, you can go under the driverside dash and find the module that runs the door/dome light. But for me, I have a Cruise Control module that is blocking the door/dome light module. So, I opted to go this route instead and used the (+)pos wire for my constant 12v power from the dome light, and the (-)neg door wire is running next to it for my ground. Im sure there are different ways of doing this, but this is the route I took. This is not a DIY on hooking up your dome light to your footwell LED. This will not work with the Dome Light on/off switch. There is info on that, just google

DISCLAIMER: Do this at your OWN RISK. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, find a local shop to have it done. Im not responsible, if you catch your car on fire or something doesn't work, because you did something wrong. I did this and its working just fine. Happy Modding

Tools Needed:
~8mm wrench
~wire cutter/stripper
~flat head screw driver/plastic pry tool
~solder and soldering gun(recommended)
~heat shrink
~butt connectors(if you chose this over soldering)
~electrical tape
~pliers
~splice connectors
~18awg wires 6-7ft (+power/-neg)

Wiring colors/stripe:
~White/Red = (+)pos constant 12v
~Green/Red = (-)neg Door

This step is if you don't know which wire is (+)pos or (-)neg, but not necessary if you already know
To start, remove the dome light cover and base to expose the wires. Use a flat head screw driver or plastic pry tool to remove the clear cover.

Then use 8mm wrench to remove the 2 nuts

2 wires should be connected to a harness. My wires are white/red(+)pos and green/red(-)neg. To determine which wire is (+)pos/(-)neg, I used the led strip and touched the metal prongs and figured it out which was which. You will not shock yourself, blow a fuse or fry the LED bulb if your wrong

Remove the weather stripping for easy access to the headliner and A-pillar

Remove the driver side A-pillar, because that's where the wires run to the module under the driver dash. Pull from the headliner down to the dash. Its just held on by clips and use some force

This is where you will see the colored wires that you saw in the dome light harness. For me, I have 2 white/red wires(yellow circle). 1 of the wires goes to the map light and the other to the dome. It doesn't matter what 12v constant you use, just be sure to wire your ground to the (-)neg door wire

Remove the clips from the headliner for easier access to the wires. Unless you want to undo all that tape and clips you see. I used a flat head screw driver for the visor and clip and fingers to remove the plastic clips

pull the headliner down a little to expose the wires. Don't mind the blue circle

Use the splice connectors to join the new wires that's going to be running your footwell LED's

Once you connected the wires, plug in your LED's before buttoning everything back up. It will save you a load of headaches from having to take everything apart, if it doesn't work
Driver door open

Driver door closed

Passenger door open

Passenger door closed

Run new wires down with the other wires in the A-pillar. You can do this however you like. There is a small gap in between the A-pillar and dash that you can run your new wires through

This is where I will finish. This was just to show you how to hook up your LED strip to turn on and off with the door. And there are videos on youtube that can show you how to mount the LED strip under your dash.
Again, you can use any 12v constant, I just used the dome light since it was running next to the (-)neg door wire

Good Luck

You could've saved a ton of time and just wired into the actual dome fuse under the dash. Smh...
