I had someone drop off a Y8 tranny to me the other night, guy said it was making noise and clicking, but that it had been working fine otherwise. I figured it need an ISB or diff bearing. Pulled the case to find that 4 teeth were gone off the countershaft and every 4th tooth on the ring gear was chipped. What I don't get is all the bearings were good, there was no way the countershaft or differential walked. Diff was good, no signs of wear on the diff pin or spider gears. He said he was just driving through town and it started clicking. I know the car has seen the track before and was probably launched hard. That said its a stock Y8 and as far as I can tell the transmission has never been apart before, looks like factory hondabond. It looks like the plug for the snap ring was out before, but i'm guessing someone thought it was the fill hole. Anyone have any insight into what caused this? Pics of the carnage below:

The CSB had walked about, but that didn't cause it.

It's a stock FD, which is one of the three big weak points in the D trans.

This. And as Aquafina said, you'll need to push that CSB down and post it, provided it's still in good shape.

He's correct. For the B- and D- series, the final drive (countershaft/ring), differential, ISB, and upper CSB all give the most problems in terms of mechanical failure. The older D's also have those shitty, cast aluminum shift forks that snap fingers off.

To anyone that wondered we ended up getting another Y8 tranny with a bad ISB, everything else looked like new, syncros, hubs, sleeves and gears all looked perfect. So we replaced the ISB and all the seals and put it back together. Transmission shifts good but there is still some minor bearing noise, so its coming back apart. Should have replaced all the bearings but we're trying to do this cheaply and everything else felt great, smooth and no play.

In the old civics and accords I've had good luck with just flipping the bearings around (to get a slightly tighter tolerance for that particular bearing) and popping them back in.

BUT, that was "On the cheap" and a LLoong time ago, when it was easier to pull a trans.

I haven't pulled apart anything older than a 5th gen D-series tranny so I really can't comment on anything older, but I can tell you for this stuff and pretty much anything newer the bearings have to go a certain way for a couple of reasons, one is oil flow, the cage is different on one side than the other, flipping them around starves the bearing for oil, and the outermost countershaft bearing has a groove cut in off center for the snap ring.
