I'm rebuilding my YS1 cable transmission due to a slight grinding of 3rd gear during high shifts and I'd like to test the differential to make sure it's working properly. Is there a visual inspection? If I remove the ring gear screws, if their a way of making sure everything is fine besides just a visual inspection of the internals?
I have never seen a bad differential; other than one that had broken spider gears.
You can check to see if the backlash on the spider gears are within factory recommended specs.

The process for checking it is in the ITR Helms manual.
If you don't have one, just visually inspect the contact patch on the gears for wear and check the case halves for wear where the gears ride (this is where the wear usually occurs on the OEM helical LSD's).
