Default Winter/ Cold Weather Oil

Just curious what oil you guys use in the winter/cold temps. I just put Castrol Syntec 5w-50 in my stock h22.

Honda recommends 5W-20. Thats what I would use if I were you. The 50 weight might be too heavy for the cold weather.

0W-30. Best cold starts along with good running viscosity.

5W-50 is crap. The viscosity range is so broad that they need long polymer chains to maintain the flexibility, the polymer chains in oils are the ones that cause sludge and coking. I'm using 5W-40

Weird, Ferrari recommends 5W-60 for racing in their cars.

umm.........there isn't much difference between the "crap" 5W50 that you say and the 5W40 that you use..........the viscosity is very close........so if you are using 5W40 its crap too.

FYI honda recommends 5W30 in all their cars with exception to some of the newer engines that use 5W20

Actually Honda recommends 0W-20 on their hybrids and 10W-30 on S2000's

I believe that the first # is the viscosity at room temp around 76 deg & the second # is the viscosity at normal eng temp about 200 deg. So if you look at it that way, it would be better to run 0W30 in the winter. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Also I wouldn't be running a viscosity higher then 30 if you are running factory bearing clearance. Nissan likes to run bigger clearance's like in the RB motors which benefit from the thicker viscosity of a 5w50 motor oil.

non-vtec, the difference is actually bigger than the numbers seem to give out.

Frostyrb, the first number is the viscosity when its cold, the second when its hot. 10W oil will be quite solid in -18C, so if your temps go below that, go for 5W or 0W. 5W-30 would be quite good during winter.

and don't they also rebuild their engines and throw away parts just for the heck of it after every race ?

5w30 all year round ! even in way below freezing winters..unless you are living in alaska or something then 0w20 or 5w20 might be good.
