Default Whats a vtec?

Alright, i looked the last 2 hours on trying to find out what a vtec is. From what i gather, it kicks on at a certain rpm, you get more horsepower if you have one, but i would like to know what is it and what does it do?

VTEC isnt a 'thing' you add to a car (like a turbo) but rather a system that is designed into the cylinder head which switches between two diferent cam profiles depending on RPM. At low speed the cam is designed for fuel eficiency and good idle characteristics. At high speed its designed for maximum breathing and performance.

The High performance Honda handbook (look in Amazon) has a great chapter on the VTEC system, cam profiles and timing. Begin your studies there.

Porsche's system is called VANOS. it's a combination of valve timing and cam profiles, and also changes the geometry of the intake manifold so that air flows through it more quickly as the throttle is increased. This allows for more air as its demand increases

No. The ZeTec's don't have variable valve timing. It's just an engine code.

BMW's system is VANOs...and it's pretty trick...makes VTEC and iVTEC look like a steamy pile or crap. Porsche's system is called VarioCam, and it's just as trick as BMW's VANOs (or doulbe VANOs depending on what car and engine) now BMW has a system out that completely removes the throttle body. The action of the valves opening and closing acts as the throttle.....much more efficient, and has the ability to make much more power. VTEC is old hat, even iVTEC
