Sorry, im not to educated in turbos, just wanted to know what a wastegate is, and does? My friend said his "external wastegate" is illegal. Why? thanks guys

 

His is SMOG illegal....it vents built up pressure to maintain a specific amount of boost....

 

a wastegate is simply the little thingy that limits your boost. I dont really know why any wastegate would be illegal. When your turbo spools up it can turn out a very high amount of air at a very high pressure, A wastegate is used to basically bypass some of the air at a preset psi. Example: If you have your car running on 7 psi of boost. When the wastgate senses 7psi, it opens and bypasses all pressure except for 7psi, If you are running 12psi of boost, Same principle. I dont have a turbo or really know much about them but I think that they are pretty self explanatory.

 

You're close, except that it's not air that it's venting. It's raw exhaust gas. That's why an external vent is illegal. Exhaust gases run the turbine.
