Default vtec on a non vtec head

hey guys i have a 1993 d15 non vtec engine it is great, but this weekend i bought a 97 vtech head for 10 bucks at the palmdale idrc races. i plan on port and polishing it. then putting it on my d15 block. but a have a problem. how do i get vtec to work without changing out to a new ecu. i was reading an older post about vtec tuning and i read about a vtec contoller. do these hook directly to the solenoid or to the ecu. i want to be able to engage vtec at a very low rpm. is there a way to just have vtec on like a swith so ic comes on whenever i feel like it??? thanx in advance for any help guys

vtach...I've never seen that one before.

It's VTEC.

Anyways, you need an ECU programed to run VTEC or have one chipped to run VTEC. The VTEC controllers only manipulate when the VTEC kicks in.

i was reading an older post about vtech tuning and i read about a vtech contoller.
im sure u read no such posts. you can use a VAFC to control it without the vtec ecu. have fun.

Okay just keep reading and searching more on mini-me swaps... You'll find a lot and if you still have questions then ask... I'm not sayin anything bad about what you posted cuz it does have some good questions... You would use an RPM activated switch most of the time if you don't want to to get a VTEC ECU... I would do that however... You can get a P28 for around $100... Anyways back to the VTEC... It is really easy do hook up on a switch and I have done it before on my friend's VX motor but that was because we were just ****** with it (all it takes is a 12 volt signal to open up the VTEC solenoid)... The ECU looks for a lot of variable to decide if okay for VTEC to engage... It will check for your oil pressure, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, engine rpm, etc.. Engaging your VTEC really really low isn't going to do anything but make you slower... There is no point in doing so and that's why most of the time Honda has figured out the optimal VTEC point... Really the one Honda ECU that I don't like is the P72 (GSR)... It's VTEC point is too low and causes the motor to bog.... I don't work with SOHC motors that often so i don't know all their VTEC x-overs, etc. by heart.. If you still decide to hook up a switch then you'll see what I'm sayin about kicking VTEC too low... If you need anything else let me know.. Peace

CC the combustion chamber before you run it. I did the opposite set up to make ultra low compression with stock parts (9? VX bottom end and 93 DX head), and ran an LS computer and pump for fuel. made a good bottom end and fuel system for turbo on stock parts. YOu, on the other hand may make C/R too high and not have valve relief. What kind of head did you get?

You need to watch "ER" more often.

i have heard about 10-30 horsepower is normal, depending on how you set the vtec control and fuel, and on what intake manifold and block you use, too many variables. depends a lot on the ecu
