Default Virgin Tuning

heres the low down...

just finished the mechanical portion of my turbo build... everything is in place, plumbed, tightened, tacked... you get the picture

now i need to try and tune my project. its a 1990 civic with a chrysler 2.2 mitsu turbo bolted to the stock d15b2 with mpfi swap.

ive NEVER tuned anything before, but am very capable of learning new things.

so after some tinkering, i followed the how-to on xenocrons website to make a basemap. set my fuel to 112% and timing to -.6 linear. it runs like a complete bag of **** and has a miss at idle..

using logic i figure since the turbo doesnt create boost until 2000+ rpms, why would i want to change the ogirinal map where there will be no boost? is that logic sound?

basicly, i just need some help from people who have tuned with turboedit. and since i have the factory fuel/timing maps it should be easy to tune this thing (although, i am afraid to just run on the stock map because of detonation)

what have yall done in order to get your car in good enough shape for some 3rd gear pulls?

That's normal for a basemap, especially considering the changes you made.

Yes. I wouldn't mess around with anything below boost. You're not likely to get any power out of it using a piggyback.

No. Everyone starts with very basic, oversimplified assumptions about engine tuning. Very little is linear. In other words, you can't just increase fuel with load and pull timing with boost. You need scientific instruments ie a wideband O2 sensor an EGT etc to see what's happening, you need a dyno to quantify the results, otherwise you may be headed in the wrong direction... you need an understanding of tuning theory to even know what to shoot for an how to react to what you're seeing, and you need the ability to interpret the sensor readings and dyno results. OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

Do not trust anything on the internet. I have read over forums like turbod16.com, pgmpfi.org, etc and everything that is posted about tuning is CRAP. It is flat out wrong. People that tune for a living don't go around teaching amateurs how to do their job.

thanks for taking the time to reply

i remade my basemap and avoided making changes to areas that wouldnt see boost. the car runs great at idle now. thanks

i have the innovate lc-1 wb02 kit, also my pm6 ecu is chipped so i will be making changes with turbo edit.

when i say tuning, i mean making my car run decent, it wont have detonation and will run pretty smooth... i dont mean squeeze my d series for every last whp it has.

so my goal is to try and level out my afrs to around 12.5 under boost, and call it a day. taking some 3rd gear pulls, and taking notes where the afrs lean/richen. i think i should be able to do that now since my basemap is 1000x better.

can you think of any TRUTHS to tuning u might want to share with a guy whos gonna do it anyways?
