Default Trouble closing tranny casing!!

I have a 97 GSR 5 Spd Tranny and I have been at it for hours.. I can NOT close the casing. All the shafts are falling in place.. So what i did was i took out the mainshaft bearing casing thats at the very top of the shaft and when i did that the casing closed just fine... So im guess thats not lining up right. Is there a trick to this?? Please help!!!

yes, i cant remember on the main shaft or the counter shaft, there is a little ring with a lip on it (kinda goes out and downward when your looking at it from the top). anyhow, there is a groove in the top half of the casing that it needs to line up with, make sure that is lined up. good luck.

Yes.. I have looked at that...Still doesn't fit.. I have actually removed that part to try it just with the bearing casing and still doesn't fit...

I read threads where they say to drop it on a phone book, block of wood, or light tap. And you know what...didn't work for me...the bearing near the snap ring shattered into pieces.

Pull the plug at the end of the case with the main shaft exposed. You'll see the snap ring in the groove of the end. Lower the case over the main/counter shafts until it rests on the snap ring.
At this point you can use a set of snap ring pliers to spread the ring or use a small flat head to spread the snap ring. Start to work the ring the mainshaft. You will see the groove it needs to lay in. If you are not able to get the ring into place completely, take the case and flip it over. Tap it GENTLY on a chunk of 2x4 and the ring should fall into place.
Easy as that!

the top counter shaft bearing is not lining up with the hole. I had to break a bad casing to see this. Now that i know this, what cause the bearing to be off 1/4 or less inch. the casing slide in okay with out the bearing.. could the bearing or the countershaft be bent or the lower casing is warp. how could you tell?

before you start hitting your tranny with 2x4s and bats make sure you stacked everything in the right order. Messing up there will give you different hieght clearance and could cause the problem. Also make sure #11 in the photo is aligned with the gear-side housing. There should be a gap for the tooth to slide into. Lastly, use a lot of lube. Everything is a tight squeeze and the bearing might be caught on the casing.

after that you can open the snap ring on the counter shaft and flip the tranny. everthing should fall into place. Good luck.

My mistake, it is the countershaft. Here are some more pics
You're probably dealing with a gap like this

Here you can see the groove at the top of the countershaft that the ring needs to snap into

First: Make sure the trans is in nuetral. If its in gear the forks will be in a stressed position so to speak and it'll be harder to align everything.

Second: use blocks of wood or something to elevate the bell housing so that the mainshaft isnt touching the surface of what ever the trans is sitting on. If the mainshaft is sitting too high, the case will never go all the way down.

Third: Make sure the ring at the top of the bearing is aligned with the provisions in the case like stated earlier. And the plug is removed for the snap ring.

Fourth: Attempt to put the case on without Hondabond/sealant. You dont wanna smear that stuff all over the place only to find out that the case isnt going to close, have it dry up in spots and have to reapply it.

Finally: Installing a casing takes patients. Dont get frustrated and ruin it/break something by using tools of persuasion (HAMMERS) A light tap with a rubber mallet at most is all that you should need to seat the case fully (While holding the snap ring open of course) If it doesnt seat properly something is wrong on the inside.

After you get it together put a few bolts in it and spin the mainshaft, place the tranny in each gear (to make sure it shifts) and spin the mainshaft while its in gear to make sure it feels ok. You dont wanna find out after its in the car that it doesn't go into a gear.
Good luck
