thrust bearings going out?
Because the noise gets louder at idle with the A/C on, I'm thinking that it might be load dependent. Does it knock when the car is moving and in gear? Louder when you goose it?
From my experience, throwout bearings make more of a squeaky noise when they go bad. If it were a thrust bearing problem, you'd hear it regardless of rpm and clutch engagement.

Really? I wasn't aware of that.
My clutch is pretty damn squeeky when its depressed.. I was thinking that was pretty normal though, my last honda did that too.
I can hear it just a little w/o the clutch depressed. If I bring the rpms up past say 1500? I will not hear the sound anymore, reguardless of weither the clutch is depressed or not.
Thanks for your info, hopefully I can narrow this noise down.

As much as I would love to, its my DD, so im still trying to diagnose a little further... As of now, im thinking the noise is deff from the throwout bearing, but im also pretty sure the thrust bearing are worn also, letting the crankshaft move when there is a load (A/C) on it, therefore moving the throw out bearing out of alignment...
any opinions?

Well honestly at this point, if you have to replace any of the common failure bearings and have to remove the tranny you might as well do all of them. Normally im the type that doesnt throw parts at something to fix it, i promote proper diag but in a situation like that I would recommend replacing every bearing possible while the tranny is out.
Yeh. Im looking into a new(er) GSR swap w/ tranny.. I need a quick fix seeing as its my daily. I can swap the motor in a day, then have the spare GSR motor/tranny to build up, I was planning on that even before this even started happening. A few ppl have offered me very good deals on complete swaps, still in car to insure perfect running condition, for less that it would cost me to do a complete rebuild.
however, I would still like to know if anyone else has had this problem, its kind of annoying that I cannot seem to single out the problem... I guess that will happen when I have time to rip it apart
