I purchased a car 3 months ago it was an abortion took me 2 months to get it running. Just recently I took the car out in colder weather and the tach is jumping all over at high RPM. anything under 4-5k is fine but if I step on it it will jump up to 7 8 9k rpm. The engine is running fine no check engine lights I can hear the motor rev up but its almost like interference in the signal at high RPM. I am having trouble diagnosing the issue due to the cold weather the engine runs at a constant 110F which runs it in a cold fuel cut safety.

I did not have this issue in warmer weather. Here are my places to look for issues. Any other suggestions?

Ignitor
Bad engine ground
Cluster?

open up your distributor and see if anything looks bad .. if u have someone with another dizzy try that out if it doesnt do it look into the ignitor and all that good stuff

just get a new dizzy so you don't try to figure out what is bad in yours

That has to be one of the dumbest statements I have read on the internet...

are you one of those people who pay everyone to do work for you? I have 3 coils and 2 igniters in the garage. If those do not work I am double checking grounds and wire connections.

PS BTW there are tests in the factory manual for specific components in the Distributor so you do not spend $200-$500 for a new "dizzy".

In addition for future reference those who have tach issues first thing is to make sure you use resistor type spark plugs as non resistor type cause too much noise and interference.

well sorry, i didn't know you had spare parts, spending like $75 for a ICM and money for other crap in a dizzy sucks whenever the whole dizzy was junk for me.

I didn't know you had access to parts to rebuild your dizzy so back off man.

i didn't mean a 'brand new' dizzy, i meant one that actually works.. from a friend or something for like ~$100

Try changing the cluster and see if it fixes it or borrow someone to try out.I had the same problem like that.Sometimes the copper colored thin wire that wraps around the coil sometimes comes loose and breaks and gives a false signal to the rpm gauge.
