Starter Issue - Clicks once but doesn't crank
Hey guys,
I'm having an issue with my starter. I've replaced my starter a few times thinking it was a bad starter but the issue is still occurring. What happens is if I try to start the car, all I hear is a click but it doesn't crank.
Things that I've tested:
1. Confirm the starter wire is getting 12v with the ignition turned to the start position.
2. Confirmed there is ground continuity from the negative battery to the starter housing
3. The car cranks if you jump the starter terminal directly to the battery.

99 Civic EX with a B20V motor. The click is coming from the starter itself. The car does randomly start when it wants to which is kind of weird.
I do have a Viper alarm installed but it doesn't have a starter kill setup installed. I do have a trigger wire going to the BLACK/YELLOW starter wire so that if someone turns the ignition, it will trip the alarm.

Could possibly be the dizzy. I had the same symptoms on my 01 gsr and found out that oil was leaking inside my dizzy. Replace it with an extra (or borrow a friends) and swap it out.

I've replaced the starter 3 times all resulting in the same issue. It will start 100% of the time if I jump the starter terminal straight to the battery. It only gives me an issue when trying to start it with the key. It doesn't make sense to me... I will try to disconnect the wire from my Viper alarm that connects to the BLACK/YELLOW ignition wire to see if it makes any difference when I get home.

Re: Starter Issue - Clicks once but doesn't crank
The starter is not the problem, if a bypass jump works then the problem must be the ign. switch or a connection problem between the ign. switch and the starter motor.
The black/yellow is the cars ign. one lead, hot in run and start, it has nothing to do with engine cranking the starter lead is black/white.
How did you confirm 12V at the starter lead, at starter motor, it sounds to me like you are not getting 12V at the starter lead if a bypass jump does crank the engine. 94

I measured the voltage from the starter wire lead. I checked it again today. The starter lead wire measured 11.7v while the battery measured at 12v.
