Default Snapped Cam Cap Bolts!

I fuking hate these damn bolts. Snapped two of them and the rest is stuck down in the hole, one was already broken before I took them out with the bolt just sitting there . Yes I was using a torque wrench...how do I take the rest out? Can I drive fine with two broken?

Picture for reference: Two red circled ones are the snapped off inside..

Where you using a half Inche torque wrench? haha. Just drilled through the middle and use a reverse bit to pull it out. Hopefully there not cross-threaded in.

I would remove them and get new ones. You should run thread chaser or tap down the holes to make sure there is no debris. This will insure that you have accurate torque. When installing i would thread in by hand and then bottom out the head of the bolt to the cam cap. I would then use a torque wrench and torque to spec.

I would recommend that you get them as remeber how much pressure can be put on the cam journal when that camshaft is compressing the valve spring.

putting them on...wrench was set at 20ft/lb's and it was the only one that broke.

I believe that it is supposed to be something like 16 inch pounds of torque for the those bolts. at least for a b17. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

it's 20 lb/ft for bolts numbered 1-10, and 7.2 lb/ft on bolts numbered 11-14 straight from helms for a gsr. #'s from a diagram they have.

if you have a welder handy you can weld a smaller bolt to the broken part u should be able to remove the broken bolt.

it would not be good to drive with broken bolts the cams could wear out the caps if they are moving from spring pressure.

Don't half *** it. Take off the rail that connects all the cam caps, you might be able to get a set of vice grips of the stud that's left. If you still can't get it out take off the cam cap and you'll definitely be able to unscrew the stud.

PRO TIP: you'll have tension on the end of the camshafts and when you pull off the cam rail the camshafts will pull off their caps. Make sure you loosen the timing belt before hand. If this is too advanced for you, it should cost no more than an hour for a pro-technician to do.

Yeah, this sucks. I will throw it out there that I ran my head like that for about a year, reving to 10k all the time and running numerous 10 sec passes. Never had an issue. I would recommend getting it fixed, but just throwing that out there.

How many were broken off? mine are broken at the ends on the left, one on top, one on bottom and then one in the middle. If it's fine to drive, I'll take it to someone that can fix it.

what could happen if you drove with them like that? i don't think anything could happen since the other 8 or so bolts will be tighten down. i've driven with the one on the very bottom left corner on my gsr for atleast 100 miles, getting on it w/e. nothing ever happened...
