Short shift change?
Replace it with a Skunk2 shifter. They are the best. They won break for ****. I had a DC Sport and it broke when I was heading out to work one morning.
I didnt change it myself, but i dont think it would be that hard to change out.

I replaced my stock shifter with a DC Sports short shifter. So far it's working out well. I haven't had any problems with it. It took me about an hour to install and it wasn't very hard. All you need is the right tools. In order to replace the shifter you're going to have to get underneath the car. What I did first was I took the shift **** off and the center panels around the shifter off. The tricky part is getting to the shifter underneath the car. The shifter sits right above the exhaust pipe attached to the transmission link. MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS INSTALL AFTER THE EXHAUST PIPE HAS COOLED DOWN. The easiest thing to do then is to try and loosen the exhaust pipe that's in your way so you can gain more access to the bottom of the shifter. You then have to unscrew the bolts that connect the transmission arm to the shifter. You then pull the shifter down towards you. You then replace the open hole with the new shifter. You must make sure that the shifter is in the correct position after insertion. Then all you do is connect the transmission arm to the shifter. The only problem you may face is trying to get the stock bushings back on. I left mine out. And after all that you can put everything back.
