Short Ram Air Intake?
Hi Everybody,
My buddy just bought a '03 Honda Civic LX w/AT and was thinking of investing in a Short Ram Air Intake. Now the concept of a SRAI has never sat very well with me because
a) The air taken in through a shorter pipe would be more turbulent than air taken in through a longer pipe which will have air with a more straight, undisturbed flow. b) Being a shorter pipe, the tip of the filter will sit nearer to the engine, thus sucking in the hotter air which surrounds the engine.
c) So far as I know, the basic concept of "RAM AIR" centers around the idea that greater air pressure is created when air is being forced through a nozzle and diffuser. With the SRAI being what it is, there would be very little if any air being pushed or forced through it, rather the amount of air sucked in would be proportional to what the engine sucks in only with very little, if not any more air being forced through.
Having said all of this, I find it hard to belive that a SRAI would increase an engine's power output than a regular air intake or free flowing filter for that matter. Perhaps I am wrong in all of this and thus the reason for the post. Anybody care to comment?
Thanks a mil in advance for all your help.

a) the pipe is sufficiently long enough, and the manifold plenum will 'damp' the effects
b) when the car is moving, ambient temp is pretty damn close to underhood temp anyways
c) you cant get a vehicle moving fast enough to benefit from ram air

From my personal ghetto experiment. my ghetto ram air which is a stock box with the tube extended to the front of car to receive "ram air" kicked the **** out of my buddy aem intake. throttle response is excellent at all rpm. the hell with aem, iceman, or anyother intake.

yeah, it should be the opposite. The longer tube of a CAI has more friction with the air, which isn't much of an issue at lower rpms, but at top end, the short ram has the advantage.
plus, off the line is when the cold air makes the biggest difference. At speed, the ambient air temp should be almost the same as underhood.

your gains/losses from a freakin intake are going to be so trivial (2-3hp, 1-2tq) and it's on an automatic... so you may as well get the one that sounds/looks the best since thats really why its going on there right?
the best bang for the buck this automatic is going to see would be to throw some manual cams in there!
