Right below b18c1. On the front of the block, next to the tranny.

Check the VIN numbers. It should be inscribed on a little blue piece of metal. Try to run it on carfax.com. I don't know if they will throw 'stolen' back at you or not but its worth a shot. If it has removed VIN's then don't buy it; getting caught with a stolen motor must suck. There are alot floating around though, two people from my town both had their 2000 electron blue civic si's stolen within the same month. My own prelude was stolen on April 25th so stolen motors must be EVERYWHERE.

The seven digit engine serial number should be stamped directly onto the block right below the engine code. The cars vin number plate will be on the back of the block if it has one. I think they started doing that in "96". (But i'm not sure about that.)

most states wont run a serial number without the motor in their presence so if its stolen, they can confiscate it.
if you have a vin number you could carfax it and see if the car has anything of value but i dobut it would come up.
