Default Rod & Main Bearing question

How do you know if your rod bearings or main bearings need to be replaced or that they are going bad without dissasembling your motor ?

The motor makes a kinda like ticking noise and a low banging noise at cold startups for like 2 sec.

You can tell if its a rod bearing if the noise goes away when you pull the plug wire off for that cylinder while its running.

where is the ticking coming from? or are you just listening for it away from the motor?

I think if your bearings are going bad, then your engine would produce a lot of vibration.

I'm thinking it could very well be any number of problems caused by lack of oil pressure. Without oil pressure on startup you can be any number of moving parts making noise due to lack of proper lubrication. I'd have everything checked. It may be time for a good ol' overhaul.

replace your oil filter

there is a valve in the filter that prevents all the oil draining out of the oiling system when you turn the car off

it sounds like the pump is having to rebuild all the pressure every time you start the car, thats bad.

this would be the easiest and cheapest thing to replace before you start trying to diagnose spun bearings.

I agree, very realistic possibility.

even at idle in my B series crx it taps. i dont think i have even heard one b Series motor that didnt tap even a little. but as far as a noise on start up, try to see if time or temp makes it better or worse. Like, run your car till norm operating temp in achieved, then shut it down, then an hour later restart it and see if the noise happends, increas your time by the hour interval. or the temp method, try to park it in a garage or some sort of enclosure over night ( during the winter of corse) and start it in the morning see what you get and let us know. also what weight oil are you using? or do you park on a hill?

next is an oil pressure gauge.
20$ at any parts store for a cheap one, it will tell you how fast or slow you are building pressure.

sounds like a honda with some miles on it.(piston slap) as long as when it's warm the noise isn't there.

Are you using OEM cast pistons or aftermarket forged ones?

how about in his head? maybe between rocker and valve before the oil is there..just a possibility.

Since he said its only for a few seconds that its making the noise.

Agreed, just sounds like lack of oil at startup + miles = noise.
